well i had my own personal boycott against the rock & roll hall of fame. i took my wife to see her sister who lives in ohio. come to find out it aint but 40 min. from their house to the hall. lookin for something to do one day because the weather was actually in the 50s. my young un wanted to go to the hall. so i said yup we can go because lynyrd skynyrd is now in the hall. wouldnt go untill they were members. alot of cool stuff in there. hand written lyrics on scraps of paper. clothes, instruments. a duck dunn 51 fender, the smashed up p bass from the cover of london calling, the michael anthony jack daniels bass, a 86 peavey from leon wilkeson a 5 string, and alot of other cool stuff. now that skynyrd is in the hall there aint no reason for yall not to go. for those that have went what did you think of the place?

i live on the west side of cleveland and have been there 3 times. For the main exhibits i've seen the Lennon, Hendrix, and Rockstar Artist (current one) main exhibits. I thought all were cool and i've always enjoyed it there. Each time i go i have more knowledge about music so i enjoy it more and more finding out little facts.

I went in the summer of '05. We could only stay a few hours but I want to go back.

I really enjoyed the written stuff - the handwritten rules of the tour written by Tina Weymouth of the Talking Heads was pretty revealing - seemed like she wanted to exert a certain amount of control over things. As a former (recovering?) bureaucrat, the letter written by Jim Morrison's Dad (a high ranking military man) to the DA's office in Florida after Jim's arrest was a marvel of very carefully worded support for his son.

I still won't go until Rush is in there. I don't understand why they haven't been inducted.

"Rush has been awarded several Juno Awards and was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 1994. Over the course of their career, the individual members of Rush have been recognized as some of the most proficient players on their respective instruments with each member winning several awards in magazine readers' polls. As a whole, Rush boasts 23 gold records and 14 platinum (3 multi-platinum) records, making them one of the best-selling rock bands in history. These statistics place Rush fifth behind The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, KISS and Aerosmith for the most consecutive gold and platinum albums by a rock band."

My band got to play there this past October in the final round of the "FORTUNE Battle of the Corporate Bands".

We placed third, but we won the "Fan's Choice Award". It was a very cool experience! I only got to spend about 90 minutes at the exhibits, not nearly as much as I would have liked. (I had my young kids with me, and their attention span was MUCH too short). I'm hoping we get to go back next year.

Even though I live in Ohio, and grew up not more than an hours drive from Cleveland, it took forever for me to go. Because all my friends that went kept telling me how much it sucked.

So last summer I finally went by myself. And I loved it. It's one of the best museums I've been to. I think people (or at least my friends) forget that it's just that - a MUSEUM - a collection of stuff from certain times and people, in this case involved in rock n roll, that you go look at and maybe learn a little about.

I recommend it to any one who enjoys museums and/or anyone who is interested in rock. I stared at some of those 'famous' basses for 10 minutes.

I understand that your question was rhetorical - but it piqued my curiousity so I had to get a sense of how many performers there are - I just can't help myself sometimes.

Turns out there are not as many as I would have thought.

The Canadians have a legitimate beef - No Rush, no Guess Who, no Bachman-Turner Overdrive, no Anne Murray, I can go on and on. :D

I wonder if any Swedes have every stepped foot in the RnR HOF - no ABBA! :eek:

Maybe this will be the year that two Halls of Fame come to their senses.

That's like boycotting Baskin Robbins because they don't have strawberry-banana.....you're just shooting yourself in the foot by not enjoying all the other great stuff that's there.

I used to live in Strongsville, so I've been there 3 or 4 times. John Taylor must have six or seven basses there. My favorite part is the performer's costume section, which often includes their instruments (like a crazy JPJ Alembic).

It is not record sales alone.

KISS is not in.

There does seem to be a bias against anything that could be fit in the Prog Rock tent and metal is pretty under-represented as well.

Strangely enough, I see the election of Skynyrd as a good sign for Rush, Guess Who, KISS and others. Part of the knock on bands that aren't in probably stems from their lack of influence on other groups and/or that they did not move very far beyond their own influences. I'm not sure Skynyrd was perceived highly on those criteria. Their biggest contribution was probably in breaking down geographic barriers - they were not a Southern Rock band they were a Rock band from the South. They helped us to not pigeonhole groups too quickly which could have happened with the whole grunge scene which seemed to spring out of Seattle.

Skynyrd is in primarily because it was a band that wrote great songs, put on a great show, sold a ton of records, and has a large devoted following to this day. If that become the criteria, and I think it should, Rush and KISS and a few more shouldn't be too far behind.


I agree with Bryan though - don't boycott, if you have a chance to go, go. And while you are there, a few good-natured jabs at the staff about the exclusion of Rush may eventually filter up to the powers that be - who knows.
