The Combo Club

Don't recall I said anything about my eight note tempo .... But if I can't play it correctly slowly, I ain't ever going to play it correctly at tempo.

Also this short scale is new to me and it's a blast! Also still working out the best position to play this semi-hollow body and it's a lot lower than I ever imagined I would be comfortable.g

And yeah, all that big band stuff. In a curious turn of synchronicity, just now recalling for the first time in a very long time Horace Heidt, Jr. and I were on very courteous and friendly terms owing to what I was doing at the time.

Aw dang I'm just called to a continuation of Sunday's conference call, ciao ciao
No, you never said anything about 1/8th notes. That's my comment on a lot of today's bass"lines". One of my basses is a short scale semi-hollow Ibanez AGB 200. Great for jazz/blues/big band/concert band work. Very "upright-y" in tone. I was using D'Addario tapes on it but one "died" and ya can't get singles so it has chromes-for now.

Hello Comboites,
(my mother was a Bozoette in high school)

And Tuesday is the open mike night at the nobby place, and Tuesday is when I'm pledged to myself to go and plug into their PA 'cause is not yet time for a Phil Jones Bass Cub to be manifested in my reality space here on the Isle of Everywhere.

That bag of ice I just put on my left shoulder is for a throb of pain my doctor told me this morning I should expect. And that I should ice my shoulder today because there will be throbbing pain. That's on account of the injection.

There are doctor's orders and then there is the rest of the world. Left the doctor's office, crossed the street and hopped the express downtown for a double latte. A gross breach of espresso etiquette if there ever was after 10 am means espresso, or perhaps macchiato, and certainly not a latte. Doesn't matter to me, I'm letting my eyes dance on the foamy spirals as I consider

Doctor said: no surgery now and will be treated with physical therapy (and this injection) and definitely take it easy today and do not play your bass again until Friday.

Which is not really why I didn't go to that open mike. Didn't go because it was raining no desire to try out the gig bag's rain fly.

And what I observe is how long it took to get this shoulder properly diagnosed.

Was noticing for quite a while my StingRay felt kinda heavy. Figured a better, softer strap might do it. Good strategy for new strap acquisition. Not a good strategy for truly alleviating shoulder pain. What I figured (I figured wrong) is the shoulder hurt because the bass is heavy. Um. They shoulder hurts because of arthritis, tendonitis, and blah blah blah.

What I did observe is this is the shoulder I used to carry my laptop -loaded attache and various tools of the trade that would get me singled out for special attention at the airports today. Like my pica pole. Security didn't like that when I was flying then. There was that time I got shook down by an elderly security guard eye patch-wearing woman in Wichita and nearly missed my flight :banghead:

The same attache, and my in-flight bag on the same shoulder over and over for years. And here I thought because my StingRay is 10 pounds.

So yeah, the latte, that's where we left off. As I walked cross-town ran into a friend I haven't seen in years and she says: call me, husband's out of town tonight, let's do it!

And just as I was going to spend the day today with chord inversions

Keep the faith

M

It was a very smart attache in black and tan modeled after Andrew Carnagie's attache. Carried it so much on that shoulder that: the metal clasps on the shoulder strap had 1/8 inch of wear from where they were attached to the D rings. And I wonder why my shoulder hurt after all this time. Snakes and Ladders of Life.

I have one duffel with a lot of stuff(guitar stand, cables, FAN, power strip, mic, etc.) in it. ALWAYS goes on my right shoulder. My left has a plethora of ailments. A wider strap does help. And Advil.

Kinda lost when I have a day I can't play my bass. So what's left is writing because I don't have to cook tonight and all caught up on [most] everything else.

The strap that's done the job for me so far is the 3 inch offering from Dog Days (no affiliation). Nice thick, cushy fabric that is now part of my [pending] stage presence. It has an Easter Egg: it's really easy for me to adjust the length from pretty long to ludicrous long.

The reason I mention this is because I'm learning how to position my semi-hollowbody. I see the pix of Jack Casidy and this seems to me about where the bass is most comfortable for me. The strap is one of those slider affairs so it allows me to make micro-adjustments until I find that bowl of porridge that's just right. Epitaph: eaten by fairy tale bears.

But yeah, I find it's not really comfortable to play a semi-hollow body bass at the height I play my Ray. That would be about where the Ray is when I rest it on my thigh when I'm seated. And really interesting to me I kind of play the semi-hollowbody at an "angle." Yet quite comfortable for my entire body.

For years when people would ask why I always stood to play, I told them that the basses all cut different and it throws me off. Now that my knees are only semi-functional, I sit, or prop my fazaza, on a stool-and adjust. It is weird after playing standing for 50 years.

Playing seated makes me think of old big band gigs where you sit behind a box with the BL's initials on the front. All the pics of the studio cats look like they play seated. And that's about it. Goncna throw in the towel when I see AC/DC play seated.

Shoulder feels way better today. Cool, since I'm seeing the next doctor in fewer than three hours.

So fellow Comboites. what's yer take? Does a 40 watt Rumble provide enough SPL to use as a stage monitor? Because it's pretty small and pretty light. But the Rumble 100 comes with an effects loop and that's important to me. And that's getting into a "too big to contemplate without wheels" territory. The effects loop because I want to bypass the preamp. I know with the PBJ gear, "flat" is flat enough to run through the primary input.

... Nice way to talk myself out of a Rumble 40 when I know the tone the snake people will hear is coming through FOH.

R40=18#; R100=22#. Only 4# difference but definitely bulkier. Both have line out. R40 doesn't have insulation but it's EZ to add(from the front). I have a 40 and a 200C. I've never tried to take either on public trans., mainly because it's relatively non-existent here.

The 40, like all Rumbles, punches above its weight in the loudness stakes. It might well be loud enough. And it’s a much more comfortable carry than the 100, even though the weight difference isn’t that big.

Why? Is typography a security risk when flying?

I guess a "pica pole" could conceivably be used as a knife? Like a machinist's ruler.

I posted this in the GK forum, but thought I would ask here as well. Looking for thoughts on the GK MB112? I have the 212-ii, and although it's great, it's a larger box and way too much power for rehursals, small acoustic types gigs and such. Does it pretty much sound like it's bigger brother, can you tell a difference with a standard vs neo driver?

And with FOH taking my EQ from the DI pedal, the Rumble 40 is essentially there as my stage monitor.
or
take the BA108v2 that is only out of the discussion because it's 30# of 20 watts and use its kickback construction. Save the dosh and start building that pedal board, or saving for the PJB ....

Meanwhile the shoulder feels better today and there are those chord inversions I want to play with.

No experience at all with the GK, a thousand pardons @FirewalZ

Yeap, a pica pole will light up like a Christmas tree on an airport scanner. I find it truly unpleasant to be taken aside for a private interview at airport security. Rant deleted. Some of my friends are FAs from the days when their uniform included wore hats. And worked for airlines that don't exist today. Oops, substitute rant partially averted.

A friend at Mergantaler-Linotype gave me a super-long see-through E gauge in postscript points and that was my standby for travel. Eventually broke it from use :(

The Ampeg is a heavy little beast, though - close to 3 kilograms heavier than the Rumble 100, and about 4.5 kilograms heavier than the Rumble 40. That could be a consideration as well.

A problem many of us(seem to)have is owning decent, working gear that has been surpassed by excellent, light weight gear and whether the expense is justified. Especially since you can't get anything($)for the older stuff.

Yes. Then those of us that have taken the plunge for the newer, excellent, light weight gear but still have the older, decent but heavier gear end up with a dining room full of stuff (long story... don't ask). Which of course it doesn't make sense to try to sell the older stuff because you won't get much back out of it as you say, so... ugh. This is one of those weird cases where having extra stuff sitting around is bugging me more than my wife. Go figure.

The advantage of living by myself. I only have to listen to myself complain(mine's in the breakfast nook)

Should be great for the young’uns, though - they get access to some very good gear cheaply, AND they have the backs and shoulders to schlep it around. :)

This is especially true for PA gear...our soundman has a warehouse full of top grade gear....big, heavy and no one wants

Enjoying the journal, M, until you get to the shoulder problems. I sympathize with you, mostly because I'm feeling your pain (literally) myself. I'm also wondering if the amount of keyboarding I do (maybe you too) where my right arm sits up in the air. Then I put the bass on that shoulder for 3-4 hours at a time and wonder why my shoulder is killing me. I also tried the wider, more comfortable strap. It's made it nice, but hasn't fixed the shoulder. Please keep us posted on that, as well as the blues gig in hoping you're getting to.

BTW, everyone, this is the first time all week I've had a moment to get on and read club news. The school year is underway and fourth graders are tiny in August! Carry on please. :hyper:
