The Comprehensive List of Black Nylon Tapewound Strings!!!

Nobody here can predict what will work for you and any descriptions of tone are pure subjective perception based on a particular string on a particular bass played by a particular player through a particular rig.
I can say that the flats that I have on my newer MIM fretless J pale in comparison but I guess it's not really fair to compare stock strings with ones that I prefer as strings are often the first thing to go on a new bass.
I've only used flats on my fretless. To be honest I don't really know the brand names of other flats I've used that I've used save a set of GHS but those weren't on my bass. One thing that I can definately say is that the 9120's simply felt the best to me of all of the flats I've tried.
Truthfully, I could go on all day about their positive attributes but you'll never know if they're for you until you try them. The last time I saw them at Musiciansfriend.com they were $15 which shipping still made them $5 cheaper than my local retailer. I think you may like them but if not then your not out much money.

Compared to roundwounds I'd say yes but not compared to flatwounds. I'm using the La Bella tapes now and think they are closer to roundwounds than the flats I've tried (La Bellas, TIs, Chromes) in both tone and feel. By feel I don't mean the actual textural sensation of string on finger, just the tension and playability. The tension is considerably lower than most flats and they seem more flexible. I like slapping these tapes more than slapping any flats I've tried. For thud I'd go with the La Bella deep talking flats. For minimizing sustain i'd put a piece of sponge under the strings.

Okay, after some in depth research, some great expertise and direction from all of you, I have narrowed my search down to these 3 sets of black nylons to pick from: GHS, La Bella, Pyramids. All of these companies make nylons that will fit the Hofner CT. All seem to have mostly positive reviews. Assuming that cost is not an issue and that I'm looking just for your personal opinions, kind of like a survey (review), which of these 3 would you choose if you were choosing with these top priorities in this order:
1. Tone
2. Sustain
3. Durability

I'm actually not a big fan of tapewounds anymore. Didn't like the way they sounded on my acoustic bass at all.
Thanks to everyone for the input on the black nylons. I had 25 dollar gift card at Amazon so I got a set of GHS medium tapes. I'll give those a go and if they don't fit the bill, I'll try the La Bellas. I always have the La Bella deep talkin' beatle bass flats that i can put on which i have on the red ct.

Can anyone shed any light on which of the tapewound strings have black silk? I got a set from someone else, but I don't know what type they are. I'm thinking they might be Fenders (they're a tiny bit gloss and not completely flat, unlike the LaBellas). They also have more growl and brightness than the LaBellas.
The Status Graphite ones have black silk. They were my faves of all the tapewounds I tried!
Are they kind of bumpy? Low tension? If so they sound like Fender 9120s, which just happen to be my favorite strings.
Just tried the Pyramids. I like them, they are alot like the LaBellas but sound even more like an upright. The E string is very fat and would not fit into the nut slot though. I still like the Fenders better though!
If the strings are Status they are lower tension than some of the tapes. I have my ABG strung with the status stings now and am digging the sound. On a plus side not much adjusting to the bass when restrung.
Yeah, they are a little bumpy, not totally smooth like some of the others. The bumps are subtle, but I'm thinking these are the Fenders . . .
I've currently got a set of the Rotos on my L-2000 and I really like the A-G strings but the E is just too whumpy, and not in a good way. Is it the strings or the setup?

Ok so I’ve got a question regarding a set I saw on a bass once. They where black, solid and flat If that makes any sense. Solid as in there was no space between the windings and flat as in flat like a flat wound. It’s like they where coated in graphite or something. They where on this guys bass I was doing a craigslist deal with and he had no idea what they where and I would love to have a set if I could just find out what they where. Anybody have any ideas?

Those definitely sound like tapewounds. If the silks were black as well then they may have been Status strings.

Um no, solid as in there where no visible windings kinda like a high e or b on a guitar or like an ashbory string but black and slick to the touch. I’d say they looked more like graphite but could’ve also been nylon, are these status strings? Does anyone have a close up picture of there status strings they would be willing to post?
