Um no, solid as in there where no visible windings kinda like a high e or b on a guitar or like an ashbory string but black and slick to the touch. I’d say they looked more like graphite but could’ve also been nylon, are these status strings? Does anyone have a close up picture of there status strings they would be willing to post?

No, the Status strings are wrapped, just like all the other tapewounds.

Hmm . . . it almost sounds like a black, nylon acoustic string.

I'm sure the strings you saw were tapewounds. They have windings, but there isn't any 'gap' between them. It's just a solid black, flatwound string essentially. Here's a closeup picture:

Ok so I guess there must be some kind of mis understanding as to what I am trying to describe.
I mean flat as in flat, no visible windings, no bumps, ridges, ripples, ribs, flat like a piece of glass flat. Also just to clarify I do in fact know what tape wounds generally look like as I have used a few various brands of them over the years. So anyways with that said I want to share with you guys a stroke of genus I had today. I took some long strands of heat shrink tubing in two different sizes and coated a set of D’Addario chromes with it. Slapped ‘em on one of my p basses and I’m now in thud heaven these may just be the deepest darkest sounding strings ever. Don’t believe me, try it for yourself. All you need is some heat shrink and an old set of flats. hell I may just try this with a set of rounds next. Oh and they are flat like the strings I have been trying to describe and although the texture and tension is very different they do look very similar. here’s some pic’s.

Try the Status-Graphite Tapewounds too (.045 .065 .085 .105 .130). They're my faves. Black silk wrap too, so they're all black. The way tapewound strings should be

+1 I use these on my Tacoma Thunderchief fretless 4-string acoustic bass. Sounds just like an upright! I tried these strings on my Fender Aerodyne Jazz bass and they weren't ballsy enough for rock/blues/jazz rock. But they're perfect for the acoustic bass sound on the Thunderchief.

I was into them for a little while a few years ago (when I started this thread). Discovered Jazz Rounds shortly afterwards and I've been using them ever since!

Don't even really like tapewounds anymore (tonally)

I got some GHS tapewounds to replace my "stock" strings on my Yamaha rbx 350. The new strings are slightly thicker than the old ones. Does anything need to be adjusted even though the action feels fine?

How would you compare the Thomastik-Infeld Jazz flats to the Status-Graphite Black Nylon strings?

I have a 2009 Fender Am. St. P-Bass which I played for a year with Fender 9120 Nylon Tapewounds. They sounded OK but I wanted something more sweet, creamy and dark (yet with some definition) - think of dub or house or upright bass sound.

So I strung the P-Bass with T-I Jazz flats a week ago. The sound is crystal clear, the output quite high, but the tone is rather metallic, not so creamy and deep. However, I do like the low tension a lot.

Should I just wait till they get old and mellow - will they ever?

Or should I switch to, say, Status-Graphite Black Nylons?

By the way, my amp is a MarkBass mini CMD 121p combo, EQ set flat.

I have a Lightwave fretless that I tried the Status tapewounds on and I really did not care for them.... there was, well lack of a better term, plasticy kind of sound that just did not work for me.... Went with the TI flats and really like them.... tried the RotoSound tapes thinking that they would be thumpier. No go.... So I am still on the TI's..... Just the best all around tone for me. But I do know what you mean with regards to the metallic tone.... and I have had mine for at least 3 years. So I eq.....

If you are reluctant to eqing your sound, the Status tapes won't be what you are looking for either I am afraid. You might go the way of the LaBella Deep Talkin' series. Not tapewound but supposed to be thumpy and dark.... Have not tried them myself, I know I should. But I will tell you what, there is nothing like the mids of the TI's. Especially if you are going for an upright type sound.

From what I hear, they are pretty warm and full bodied in their regular configuration 40-55-75-105, so they should be even better in their custom augmented gauges. I just hope they won't be too high tension... What do you think?

Have no earthly idea... never tried them. But the gauge seems like they wouldn't be too crazy. But I am sure that they will not be anything like the TI's feel wise. I know that Pyramids are not cheep but go for it. There is nothing like trying a new set of strings. Make sure you let all know what you think once you put them on.

Anybody know if the Status strings will fit a Dano 63 long scale? The holes for the strings on the tuners on this model are pretty small.

A question for the tape wound experts -

I have a Godin A4 acoustic electric - these normally come with roundwounds on them, but the one I have (bought used) has flats (I think they're Fender, but not sure - they have a surf green wrap on the ball end, and get tapered a lot on the tuner end)

I've been thinking about going with tapewounds, as the set on there is a bit uneven - the G string dies pretty quick. How do tape wounds compare to flats, especially considering on an ac/el as opposed to a bass with magnetic pickups? Would I get more or less sustain?

Any opinions or experience is appreciated!
