looks like for my 32-scale 5-string acoustic-electric (w/ piezo - so the grounding issue should be non existent) it looks like my only option for the high C is the LaBella .43?
i can't seem to find the 6 string set of the rotos on their website.
- but the .50 is on juststrings.com

any opinions? roto or labella?

I'm not finding much information but I will keep looking. Capnserv I believe you but your not pointing me in any direction here.

I'm looking for 5 string round wound. I'm not going to buy something based an on a vague generality.

Does anyone know if GHS publishes a string tension chart like D'Addario does?
I've got a GHS 3060 set and want to find out the string tension for them. They break out as follows:

E 3064 0.105
A 3063 0.090
D 3062 0.070
G 3061 0.050

I don't know the specific tensions. I've just mounted my second set of GHS Tapewounds on my Pedulla Pentabuzz.

I guess they work. Someone who hears me play pretty often was asking me about both of the basses I played last night. His comment about the Pentabuzz (with the GHS tapes) was that it was very close to the CTI-era Ron Carter sound.

That is actually the very sound I'm trying to cop in that setting, so that works for me!!

My best description is in relation to how other strings play on that bass. I tried to put a set of Fat Beams on it, and I didn't even leave them on for ten minutes. I just couldn't get a sound that worked. I have had good luck with Black Beauties, but there's just not enough attack on those after they lose their zing...the sound gets more "rubber band-y" after they've been on about a month.

The GHS tapes, in comparison, have more attack and bottom--which is good. They have less dynamic range, which is less good for me, but that could very well be the factor that is actually HELPING get that CTI-era sound...woody and up front, but a little constricted.

I am interested to know anyone else who has used multiple brands of Tapewound strings on a Pentabuzz. In the settings I play, everything else tends to be acoustic, and I have a better chance of getting booked when I blend into that sound better. So far, out of everything I've put on that Pentabuzz, tapewounds are getting me closer to that acoustic sound than anything else.

I've had two sets of TI Flats on there...I like what they do, and I like the sound, but you really can't dig in at all with them, or they get into that "boing boing boing" thing that doesn't sound good. At least in my experience, if you take it very easy with the right hand, they sound nice...but it also can take a jazz gig to the "lounge" place, and that's not really the point.

Has anyone used the GHS flats, then put on something else that made them have a "wow" moment? That's the info I'd be interested in. I'll sure report back any experiences I have...

All I'm saying is that they are all roundwound. I've played them all and personally dissected the D'Addarios and Fenders to discover what was underneath (rounds), and the LaBellas are visibly rounds under the tape and advertised as such. I haven't taken apart the GHS or Status tapes, but those are advertised rounds as well.

All the sets I've tried have been 5-string sets. (I still use the four-string sets of Labellas and D'addarios, as I have no 5ers anymore).

Admittedly, the only ones I haven't tried are Rotos, but Jason from bassstringsonline.com confirmed those are rounds as well.

I guess it depends on what you want beyond that - smooth feel, bright/dark, flexibility, etc.

I have clips of the Labella tapes posted in a separate thread if you want a general idea of a tone.

I have taken apart status graphite tapewounds. Only the D and G strings are typical round wounds. The B,E, and A strings are extremely smooth to the touch. Even more smooth than some flatwounds. I'm not sure what they are. Some kind of groundwound or something.
