The CORT Club (Part 2)

Cort A5 Beyond MS:

Does anyone know the string spacing on one of these? I've seen reviews that say 15mm, 16.5mm and a store told me 18mm. Cort site doesn't say.
The does indeed “say”…..

Ok, here’s another peeve of mine. Rats nest control cavities.

I was a milspec electronics assembler for 10 years. This kind of finish work is not only conducive to failure, but actually takes longer to do than having a prefab circuit fully assembled in a jig with all the wires cut to proper lengths. The entire assembly just slips in and you’re done. In this example the majority of the wires are way too long. I have found this type of assembly in most chinese and Indonesian manufactured instruments. I’ve had both, Indonesian made Cort & Ibanez basses and Sadowsky chinese basses delivered either wired incorrectly or with portions of the circuit not functioning at all.

I prefer the treble control closer to the neck, bass control closer to the control jack, so I’ll be swapping those controls, but it’ll be a bit of a chore with the way this cavity is. Fingers crossed.

I also prefer control knobs with indicators ( Mixers, amps, pedals, all have dots or lines, yet none on basses, odd.) So I’ll be swapping in knobs with indicator lines too.

This is what a control cavity should look like.

That didn't take long. What didn't you like about it?
Plugged in, it didn’t give me goosebumps. My bar is really high for tone. I have a specific sound in my head. if i don’t hear it from an instrument, I simply move on. Although i was really pleased to see how well the tone control worked in active mode. That was a real positive. Neck is killer too. Playability….Aces. Once I set it up, it was rocket fast, and crystal clear. I think I’m just a Sadowsky guy. What can I say.

Somebody will get a killer bass at a blowout price.

So I decided to run my B5 in passive and use the Bass and Treble controls on my Xenyx 502 mixer to compare the sound I've been getting from the onboard Markbass preamp.
I think the mixer's controls sound better than the Markbass preamp.

Considering ether getting a Two Notes Opus or a MXR M81 or for the ultimate (to me) put a John East Uni-Pre 5 knob onboard preamp in it.
That Opus is amazing for the price!
