(10) Drums. The using of any drum or other instrument or device for the purpose of attracting attention by the creation of noise within the city, unless a permit for such use has been obtained from the city manager or chief of police.

This is strange- no limit on the volume of a drum or drums, but they need to have a permit! I think in practice the drum volume would be grouped under the amplified entertainment clause with your band.

It would be hard, but doable to get under 70 db @ 50ft if you were playing *inside*, but outside? Very difficult, close to impossible. I played at the club that eventually got shut down here in Charlottesville (70 db @ the sidewalk outside the club, probably about 40 or maybe even 50 feet from the edge of the stage/PA front- but we were inside, cop was outside!) on New Years Eve with my Grateful Dead cover band- two drummers, two guitars, bass, keys, and we played so quietly that it really impeded our performance, but we stayed just below the limit. The drummers really hated it. Our sound man said the cop basically was letting us spike up to ~72 or 73 db, A-weighted, and was ok with that. Without a window between us and the meter there's no way we would have gotten away with it.

Just goes to show that the people who write those ordinances have no idea what they’re doing, especially when it comes to enforcing them. The sound police should be doing time-lapsed averages. That’s what matters, not the occasional peaks. This because you can stand there while the band’s playing with the meter in hand and watch the numbers roll up and down by several dB, but not hear any appreciable difference in levels.

I once took SPL readings in a school cafeteria at lunch time for administrators who were concerned about the noise levels. The noisiest group – the junior high kids – peaked at 98 dB (!), but a two-minute reading averaged 90 dB. So if you were peaking 72-73 dB, you were well within the "spirit of the law." :)

in some cases all those very specific, strict noise ordinances towns are lucky. If you're under 60db at the property line, then good for you. I know lots of towns that very deliberately do not have such specifics. Which can be way worse. Then the cops can just slap you with 'public nuisance' at their discretion. :hmm:

It’s always a hoot when the guy making the most noise in the thread is the one who doesn’t have a clue what he’s talking about. I guess anyone who can Google to find the SPL of a vacuum cleaner is automatically an expert.

Really? Anything between 0 and 70 dB? If you had even a vague idea of what you’re talking about, you’d know that the background noise level of a recording studio is ~25 dB. Have you ever been in a recording studio? You really think you can operate a PA system lower than the background noise level in a recording studio?

Obviously, you’re the one who would have been smart to keep quiet about that. You don’t even have a SLM, do you? Never even used one, have you?


If you knew a wit about the physics of sound you’d know about the cumulative effect of multiple noise sources. Or didn’t you notice that when the restaurant fills up with patrons the din of conversation tends to get really loud?


In your dreams. Most likely the noise level in the room from all the chatting patrons was averaging well over 80 dB. If your rig was staying below that level out where the tables were (let’s say at ~20 ft. away), that means you were pushing probably 90 dB where you standing (assuming 2-3 ft. away from it).

If you knew anything about the cumulative effect of multiple sound sources, you’d know that each additional noise source adds about 3 dB (assuming all sources are calibrated to a reference SPL). The distance a SPL measurement is taken at matters as well; fortunately that's to our advantage. If the allowable SPL is 70 dB measured at ~20 ft, your rig would be measuring ~79-80 dB where you’re standing, probably 2-3 ft away from it. No problem, you can play at 80 dB and maintain 70 dB to the patrons, right?

No way. Let’s take the case of an imaginary band with three vocalists, two guitarists, bass and drums. If everyone in the band is generating 80 dB (measured up close to them), the sound level out at the tables (20 ft. away) is going to be something like 88 dB on passages where everyone is playing at the same time.

In order for our imaginary band’s total output not to exceed 70 dB out in the room, no single player or vocalist would be able to generate more than 62 dB (measured up close). Since I’m sure you have no clue how low that is, it’s about the same as a faucet running water in a sink.

And being bass players we have the added issue of the ear’s poor sensitivity of low frequencies at low SPL. I assume you’ve never heard of the Fletcher-Munson curves, so I’ll get you up to speed. Since the ear has poor sensitivity to low frequencies, that means the bass has to be turned up in order for it to be heard in a proper blend/mix with the rest of the instruments. That in turn means if the sound police are measuring the SPL of our imaginary band with C-weighting, you’ll easily exceed your 62 dB restriction. Oops. Hope your amp has a headphonejack.

I’ll let you do your own research to figure out the difference between C- and A-weighted SPL measurements and how it impacts the bass in music production or reproduction.

Is that really your position? You're really stating that its impossible to turn a pa system down to any arbitrary level between its max output and zero? Really? That's laughable.

You've got a number of knobs to work with throughout the various gain stages, but if you are struggling with the knob concept, I guess gain stages are best saved for later.

So Mr. Expert, tell us what YOU think is the lowest you can turn an amp down to? How is it you can hit zero, but can't stop off anywhere between 0 and 70dB? I wonder where you'd be at if you started at an output of 100dB and turned the power amp attenuator down from the starting point 0dB (max) to -30dB.... I guess at that point if you pulled the PA main sliders down the PA wouldn't get any quieter? Is that how you think this stuff works?

Not to burst your bubble, but F-M curves have been pretty common knowlege at least since I heard about them when I was a teenager and just getting into Hi-Fi stuff. Not rocket science. They've had "loudness" buttons to boost bass at low volumes on stereos to approximate a correction for that for at least 35 years since I bought my first stereo. I'm sure they go back even further, somehow I just bet they weren't discovered the day I started reading Stereo Review. Radio shack sells sound pressure meters, they're not secret military technology either.
But if you think it makes you sound like an expert to expound on them, go ahead.

Because there comes a point where any output that may be coming from the equipment is below the threshold of audibility, or at least below the point at which any output is masked by ambient noise. Go back and re-read Wayne's point about the background noise level in a quiet recording studio. If the background noise in a studio is 25 dB, do you really think that you could hear a 5 dB sound? Remember that the dB scale is logarithmic, so a 5 dB sound is several orders of magnitude quieter than a 25 dB sound

The dB numbers on that picture are an electrical measure. They do NOT refer to dB SPL.

Radio shack sells sound pressure meters, they're not secret military technology either.

Radio Shack SPL meters don't go below 50 dB.

It’s obvious to the rest of us that the real issue is that at some point you can’t even hear yourself over the ambient crowd noise in the room, if the band as a whole is expected to maintain a >70 dBSPL.


School us, please, we want to know.
School yourself. Go out and have the real-life experience of doing a gig with your amp below 65 dB, measured at where you’re standing. Let us know how that goes.

Doesn't matter at all to my argument whether a drop of 30db SPL corresponds to a drop of 30dBv. It's like the guys in Spinal Tap saying "But our knobs go to 20!" Chicago doesn't get farther away because you measure in kilometers instead of miles.

I simply didn't bring that up because it's irrelevant, and it would only serve to confuse anyone without the math/EE background. Does it change the fact that a twist of the knob will bring the SPL down 30db to 70dB? No. It simply changes the amount you have to twist the knob.

Its an irrelevant distraction, not a legitimate argument. Nice try though. You know what a first year EE student knows about power vs voltage. You really think that makes you look like an expert?

Yes, laid down the diversion on that issue, best to move on before anyone notices there's no relevance or substance to that particular objection.

But sure, let's move to the "real" issue. There are a few things you don't seem to be able to grasp. The 70dB is to be measured at the street, not at the stage. Intensity diminishes with distance. They can be louder than 70 dB on stage and only be 70 at the street.

Anyway, 70dB is as loud as a vacuum cleaner at 1 meter. Even if they were limited to 70 dB at the stage, no reason to not be able to hear a vacuum cleaner in a crowded bar. Stay a foot from the amp instead of 3 and its even louder than that.

So their amps can be louder than 70dB, when even 70 dB is plenty loud enough to hear and you can make it seem even louder still by moving closer to the amp. What's the problem? Its simply not as much fun to play quiet. Its not easy to play quiet and maintain your intensity. Drummer is the only one with a beef, you can play like always and just twist a knob. He's got to physically change up and hold back a lot to play quiet.

Its the law, that's what he's got to deal with. Whether its ridiculous or not, its not impossible. Should be happy he's not just dropping entertainment altogether and at least giving it a try.

If it turns out you're only entertaining the first row of tables because nobody else can hear you, that's your audience. Still better that than pay to play at 100dB.

That's precisely the plan, use that to your advantage. You're above 70dB at the stage, which drops off by the street because of the distance. The crowd at that point is the ambient noise which pretty much masks the band as they're nearly the same intensity at the street.

Cops going to ticket the band when they have to strain to hear it over the crowd? Not likely. Problem solved. You're playing above 70dB at the front of the stage, and since you're even closer to your amps than the front of the stage is, the amp is even louder. So you can hear yourself.

The point in gigging is that the audience gets to hear your music, no? If they just wanted to hear themselves, they could 've stayed in the practice room.
All this technical BS aside, the OP's band was forced to play its music in a way that made it sound weak and far from how it's supposed to sound. They had all the right to quit. IMO if you're playing original music, money is NOT more important than delivering quality.

Situation sucks, but if its essentially just a practice, better to get paid to practice don't you think? Nothing like gigging in front of people, the pressure.

That's personal preference. But in this case, unless the OP is Jimmy Buffet, Margaritaville was a cover song for him, not an original.... :D

This is not at all responsive to my post. My post was not about whether a band playing at 70 dB at the stage would be masked by 70 dB of crowd noise at the street. My post responded to your argument that you can play at any volume between 0 and 70 dB by simply turning down the volume knob.

You should take your own advice. You have some legitimate points, but they're getting lost beneath the noise you make when you use unsupportable arguments to try to belittle others.
