Double Bass The DEFINITIVE Palatino EUB Modification Thread

… The scale is not as long as my DB’s but still like a little shorter 3/4 bass (103mm)….Not like Ibanez UB804’s (84mm)….

Oh, that‘s really small :smug:.

BTW, when I had to decide if I want a Palatino or a Stagg, I read through both megathreads and decided that the Stagg needs less and easier modifications.

And when I could get a Stagg that was mostly cosmetically damaged for less than half the price new, I bought it. Later I replaced the neck with a rosewood one (which needed planning since I never could make the trussrod work), that I got also very cheap.

Worst thing with all the cheap EUBs is that the fingerboard in most cases needs planing. If you cannot do that yourself without damaging it, that makes the instrument more expensive.

So the cheap ones are for tweakers, not for players that want to use it straight away from the beginning.

Yeah, those basses are not perfect out of the box….Is strange because you can buy, decent Quality very cheap El. Basses, Drums, Acoustic guitars….
I had lucky because, the previous owner ordered from a luthier, a good ebony fingerboard….If you really heavily upgrade the Pallatino, you can stay under $1,5! I think it’s still worth….:hyper:

Using the smiley I was referring to the 103 and 84 mm (instead of cm).
I know that was a kind of a typing error, but that would have been small.
Yeah, yeah typing error….TB not allow to edit post after a while…

I have never heard an eminence I cared for. Could have been the player. They were decent bassists, but I thought the sound sucked rather badly. That is my personal opinion fwiw.

I don't choose my instruments based on how much I spent for them but on what they do for me. If a $50 axe will do the gig why take out a better one? It's just a tool to be used in most cases until you get to museum and historically significant instruments, of which I have several, but I don't need that level equipment for what I am doing these days. I am quite content with my palatino eub. Most of their other offerings are a waste of space, but these basses are useful.

BF22 I hope some day you get over your hangups and can be content to just play. I don't understand why you insist on harping on and on about a bad instrument you purchased and were unsatisfied with.

Very interesting indeed as usually the whole point of an instrument is for the sound.. so getting a "tool" for the job sounds nice, but in the end it's literally sound that people hear and that defines you.. or atleast i was under that understanding learning music..

My only "harping and hangups" were allowing a company to make such a "tool" that can't really be used unless you replace all the parts of that tool before using the tool.. that was my only hangup.. (that I couldn't use that tool)

I guess it's similar to buying an old car that you have to fix up right after buying it.. except that the Pallatino is not an old used car.. I bought it new etc..

The palatino was a good attempt to make an EUB yes, but unfortunately they pushed it out with many flaws.. which is the only part I'm "harping about" ...

Perhaps it was because they wanted it to be under a certain price point..

In any case, I'm now much more "content" than I was and I only mention the things to at the very least talk about bass things on talkbass and just give my opinion as well..

I'm not selling the Eminence or anything , I'm simply giving my personal experience with it and even included videos to show what I was talking about.

After all, that is talkbass and what it's about for me..

The person who mentioned the palatino is a bass for tweakers is exactly what it is. People who can fix up and repair things not right from the start.

And that's ok. Because in truth, you all who did mod the palatino are pretty impressive so my hats off to you all.

My only only leftover project or "mod" i have left is to turn a 4-string upright bass into a 5-string upright bass! And I'm not even going to do it, and experience luthier is.

If the tool doesn't work - sounds wrong for the gig - then it isn't appropriate.

The 4-5 conversion is a handful of issues, way more than the old 3 to 4 conversions. I'd just start with a bass designed and built for 5 strings. If the conversion wasn't a big job I'd convert a Palatino to a 5, but that is not gonna happen.

I generally prefer old cars that are serviceable and I make reliable. I don't care for most of the new trendy crap, you can't even find a plain 2 door rear wheel drive pickup on a lot anymore. I like things that do what I need them to do and don't want anything beyond that.

Now get off my lawn! (and go practice)

Alright lets, talk about Pallatino mods! Who wants please, countinue the Eminence conversation in the Eminence threat….

What pickup do you recommend for the Pallatino bass? Maybe my Pickup just died l…I’m not sure, maybe just the preamp defected, I have to check it first…..Do you think Realist could work? I’m affraid works not so good, because the bridge doesn’t contacted directly to the body….I don’t know…

Check your battery, check your on/off switch, check your headphone jack, troubleshoot the rest of the wiring.

The pickup is pretty robust, unlikely that it has failed, more likely the stock preamp is toast. It is a decent pickup, but the rest of the wiring is lousy.

A realist or any piezo will work fine if mounted properly. It is not that dissimilar from the stock pickup in function.

Yeah, maybe just the preamp died….But what preamp I can buy it for? I didn’t find onboard acoustic bass preamps, just acoustic guitar preamps…

If you want to throw money at it with little, if any, improvement, knock yourself out. It's a palatino and the SBK-3AD makes it a solid working instrument. If you want to spend money and get a better return invest in some great strings. nobody cares what's inside when you are playing if it sounds good.

True…The 1Mohms input impedance is High Enough for the piezzo? As far as I know Palatino has piezzo film pickup, it requires very high input impedance….

no

Not suitable for this body, it will look like a hack job regardless of how it sounds. It is meant for a hollow guitar body, The Palatino is a solid body, despite it having a chamber.

I have a few ABGs and they are fine for them, but I don't think you would be satisfied with it on an upright where a bow comes into play. The semi parametric is worth the extra change. In addition the SBK perfectly fits the Palatino's body - PERFECTLY!

I just thought possible to take out the box the circuit, and install naked preamp…
