I've had two in a row Stereo Electric Mistresses that were bad. First one didn't work at all, second one did, but then started freaking out on me. Nice while it lasted, but not on my board anymore. Down to only 3 EHX pedals, and of them, only 2 have immunity from being thrown off the island. Octave Multiplexer, and SMM w/H. I do miss the swooshy, though.

I worship my new POG.

OK - here's my most recent discovery: At first I thought that I didn't like the sound of the POG through my distortion setup (I mean distortion AFTER POG). But I figured it out. First of all, I wasn't all broken-up over the thought of not using distortion as much because the POG - when driven with a compressor at its input - DOES what I look for distortion to do anyway: dense, musical harmonics with sustain. So the POG (and CS-3) takes the place of distortion to a great extent.

The trick to good high-gain distortion on the POG seems to be to stay away from the detunes and the Suboctave, and turn OFF the chorus (my normal 'non-synth' high-gain always includes a CEB-3 Between the MD-2 and the ODB-3).

So, in-total, I get a super-killer distortion tone with CS-3 > POG > MD-2 > ODB-3 > RE-20. I set the POG for dry signal same-as-bypassed - then the +1 and +2 (not the detunes) a little below that.. Like if the dry was on the center line, the +1 would be maybe 2/3rds-way toward the next line down, and the +2 maybe half-way.

Clone theory (poss 80's, with chorus-vib/vib-flange switch), and itching to get more but would like info.

is it best to try to get a 70's & 80's electronic mistress and memory man, or are the new ones just as good, or maybe better. I realise this is very objective, but a bit of opinionated feedback would be nice.

IMO, the newer pedals in general are much better than the old ones, and EHX is continuing to reissue a variety of their old, discontinued stuff.

In regards to both... you'd probably be better off with the newer ones. The older ones are a bit on the noisy side, and IMO, the sounds are mildly different.

The Deluxe Memory Man would be my recommendation if you want the best of the modern Memory Man reissues. If you don't mind delving into digital, the Stereo Memory Man with Hazarai is insanely flexible and has some great tones to offer (but it's almost nothing like the old Memory Man pedals).

For the Mistress... I need to try out a Deluxe reissue again. IIRC, there are volume drop issues. The Stereo Electric Mistress (the newest one) is similar to the other Electric Mistress pedals, and it's awesome on bass; it's a staple feature of my current sound. It's an atypical-sounding flanger with a chorus that runs in parallel (the old Mistress pedals had a bit more flexibility in sound, but did NOT have a chorus built-in).

Ok, further update. Got my 2nd board, (EHX), back from my guitarist, and went back to being insane. Stereo Electric Mistress back in my life again, as well as a Micro Qtron, and Holy Stain. Almost forgot how cool the Holy Stain is. I mean, really not much use to me in current band, but just too cool to not have, thus, insane.

mmm, birthday is allready two months ago, so I went out to buy myself a present, finally, and I promised myself: not another ehx pedal...

came home with an stereo electric misstress...
that's means EHX holds 5 out of 10 effects i have (allready had the lbm, bms, stereo pulsar and nano small stone)

No, I used it with an active bass. The "issue" is its nature - it's not a typical octave pedal in terms of tone.

As with any EHX pedal, it's a love/hate thing. There isn't much of a middle ground unless you're looking at their phasers and delay pedals.
