THE fall beer thread.

My summer beer thread got a good response, so I figured Id see if any others had delved into fall seasonals.

Ive had a couple to include, Flying Dog Dogtoberfest, Samuel Adams Octoberfest, and Blue Moons Pumpkin ale, which was surprisingly decent.

What are you enjoying as fall seasonals?

I have a hard time thinking of fall seasonals that I really anticipate, but here are two that I love.

North Coast Brewery - Old Stock Ale

I buy a few sixes of this every fall, putting one in my second fridge for aging. In fact, a couple weeks ago I cracked open a 2004 bottle, which was fantastic. 11 or 12% ABV makes it a good choice on a cold night in fall.

Sierra Nevada - Harvest Ale

This beer used to be available for one day only and was made in small batches. This year it looks like they are making some available coast-to-coast. It will go fast.

Harvest is made with fresh, not dried hops. So unlike Old Stock, drink it right away. Man is it good.

Whats your feedback on blue moon pumpkin ?

Normally I don't go for the flavored micro brews, but I've never met a pumpkin ale I didn't like.

Come to think of it, I'm a bit of a pumpkin freak when October rolls around...got some pumpkin ice cream in the freezer, maybe dinner at Mount Blue Restaurant for some pumpkin ravioli this weekend (owned by Joe Perry - high prices, o.k. food but the ravioli is tasty) . Good times, good times.

You guys need to look around more...

Not being a dickhead or anything but I tend to shun the atomically large corporate micro's...I always root for the little guy...

If you want fine tasting seasonal's...here are my picks for this fall...well, its more of a list of the great fall beers I had the past 2 years or so...

If Marzens are your cup of tea...

-Brooklyn Brewery makes a great Oktoberfest...great with a bowl of Chili con Carne!
-+1 to BigO on the North Coast Old Stock, hard to get over here but I've yet to have a bad beer from that brewery...
-Paulaner makes a great Marzen...smells like fresh baked bread...hint of hops with some of the best malt I've tasted in beer...
-Plus one to the Dogtoberfest as well...

Now...here's my rant about the Blue Moon company and Budwieser's poor excuse of "seasonals"(Jack's, Beach Bum, Winter Bourbon, and Spring Wheat, I think)...noticed I said company and not "brewery"...that was intentional...
Blue Moon is a branch of the Coors brewing co. and I've found they do nothing "well." That and they're basically a copycat brewery that coors uses to try and capture some of the micro market. Yes, they have their "Belgian White"...hardly tastes from Belgia...and some other flavors but they're more of a transitional beer. If you find you like the flavor profiles, venture into the world of better beer because, I'm sure I can get some back up on this one...better beer is out there...

Pumpkins...

-Dogfish Head's Punkin Ale...great beer. The pumpkin is not overkill and Dogfish makes great ales...good combination if you ask me.
-Smuttynose Pumpkin Ale...pumpkin's a little more prevalent but they offset with a different kind of Hop as opposed to Dogfish. Something else with the yeast and malt compliment the pumpkin and spice they use in it...seriously, try one of these beers on thanksgiving along with your Turkey and whatnot...you won't be disappointed.

and as always....

cheers!

^ Nooo doubt! Met Garret Oliver(briefly)while I was there. We were doing "research" for a pub we opened around where i live...

Oh, and I forgot another none...if its available there's a brewery in NC that makes THE BEST pumpkin I've ever had...Cottonwood Pumpkin Ale. Its spicier than most pumpkins with a real bready aroma. Great with bird too...

this is my fall beer of choice although they claim it's availability starts in november, they start making it for the bayfield applefest in early october, so you can get it earlier :)

I bought some of Mendocino's Octoberfest. Mendocino Brewing has always been a favorite from the Northwest and a couple years ago they opened up a brewing/bottling operation in NY or somewhere in the Northeast. With that, the price for their beers plummeted on the east coast and they are great beers for a great price.

Anyway..the Octoberfest was good. I've never been much on Octoberfest, or most lagers for that matter, but it was a nice malty drink like most Octoberfest beers.
