The Fender Bassman 100T thread

Did a quiet gig at the weekend, didn't need the 610 so took along the 100T into my GK neo 115iii cabinet. I really just use the GK for an at home practice cab but I was very pleasantly surprised, sounded fabulous with the 100T - tight, detailed and just slightly "dry". If the agents would bring the Fender neo 115 down here I would buy one, but the GK certainly did not let the 100T down and actually they did not look too bad together either. The 100T overhung each side by about an inch, but the tolex matches and the matt grey/silver grille on the GK did not clash either. I ran the 100T at 25 watts and it was plenty, with a nice growl there if I needed it.

Since speaker size doesn't dictate frequency response, what is it about 15's that differentiate from multiple 10 configurations? Exactly what is it that people like about 15's compared to a 410, 610, etc? What are the forces at work here?

Fifteens sound and feel different. They have a softer and rounder tone plus the soundwaves seem to be felt by everyone a little more, ime. Without p.a. support, I prefer fifteens for playing live.

put a fender 215 pro next to a 610 pro, or an NV215 next to an NV610 and you will definitely hear the difference. I know because I've done both. yes both size speakers can reproduce the same frequencies, but in commercially built, well designed, real world boxes it does seem that certain attributes seem to appear and that seems to be a rounder attack and better dispersion with 15s, as well as a more pleasing break up and drive. I know there are speaker gurus who will graph out how its nonsense, but there are some intangibles that just defy measurement I guess. Now a badly designed 215 can have none of that and even have weaker low end than alot of other smaller drivers, but in a decent to good box design they can really cook. That said, there are some amps I prefer with 10s. for example, the 100t to me sounds way better thru my 610pro and my 300pro sounds better thru the 215. its slight, but definitely preferable.

I pursued that possibility earlier in the year for a neo 410 but was discouraged, Chris, plus I really would prefer to hear one for myself before putting down the bucks. There is a player around here who imported a neo 410 independently and I am told it sounds very nice. I am quite happy to use the GK 115 neo for the very odd occasion when I need a small rig - I had been using it with my Markbass head but you just can't beat tubes :).
+100 to your comments about different cabs, Eyeballkid. When I think about it, the more powerful the tube head the more I prefer fifteens. I see we both own an Orange AD200, I much prefer the Orange into fifteens while I totally agree with you that the 100T is happiest into the 610.

hey guys, I've been wanting to test drive the 100T but can't find one on the floor locally. do you think it would match well with my Berg. HT112er/ex112er stack? I've also been interested in the mesa powerhouse 212. Any thoughts?
wondering about headroom with the 100T. currently i am using both power modules on my shuttlemax 12.0 to drive the stack. There has been a few occasions where I felt It ran out of headroom but for the most part has done quite well.

Hi PhatRon, when I originally bought my 100T I actually had a single HT112ER which I was using with my Markbass head. For some reason I actually preferred the Markbass into that HT112ER, it was a few months ago now and I did not go into detailed comparisons but I think the Markbass seemed a tad brighter and certainly the 100T overlapped the sides quite a bit and was not a good fit. I don't think there were any volume issues though, the 100T drove it nicely and may well have sounded better on a gig (I just compared them briefly in my lounge). I replaced the HT112ER with the GK112 neo which actually clearly suits the 100T better than the Markbass to my ears.

BASSMENTPLAYER:

Did you get the problem resolved?

Hello,

I finally got my Bassman Neo 115s yesterday. I was in Jazz Bass heaven.

Tonight I get a muffled sound occasionally (enough that it can easily be reproduced) in both the vintage and overdrive channels. I tried each of the speakers independently and they both had the issue.

It is muffled for a bit and then there is a pop and the sound goes back to being great.

Any ideas what it could be?

Hello Jerry,

>>Did you get the problem resolved?

Yeah, it was bad cable connections. One time when it was hapening I jiggled the speaker cables and it seemed obvious from the noise that it made that the connection was the problem.

I replaced the cheap speaker cables I had and it has never happened again.

Lesson learned: Check your connections first.

All is well that ends well.

BP.

The eagle has landed!!! :hyper: :hyper:
Picked up my Super Bass 300 today and it certainly won't be going back :). The extra headroom gives more authority to the notes at a reasonable volume as I thought/hoped it would. Immediately noticeable. Just had a quick jam with it but enough to be very pleased. The 100T certainly isn't going anywhere so I think the Orange AD200 is destined to leave home :(. Can't really justify three all tube heads (well I can but I don't think the SWMBO would accept it). The SB300 really sounds great into the Begantino NV215, although it is certainly no slouch into the NV610. It doesn't quite capture that lovely old school vibe of the Orange, but comes close enough for me and is certainly way more versatile. Not too bad a schlep either - lighter than my old SVT anyway. I think the 100T/SB300 combination should handle any gig in my foreseeable future.

cool Tim, have you tried it into your fender 610 neo yet? When you say "more authority" , is that a tone thing ? So if you set your eq the same on the 100 and the 300 is there a obvious tonal difference?
I just got a 50's reissue precision bass in black with maple neck and swapped the gold pickguard out for a 3 ply black one, and it sits real pretty with these rigs . Gotta rehearsal tomorrow with a member of Huey Loui's band The News , nervous and excited!

I think it has a greater sense of control on the notes, similar to the way my old SVTs had. It is a feel thing which I enjoy, the only danger is the temptation to play too loud because it does not sound loud/overdriven when it is loud (if you know what I mean). Haven't done a side by side comparison with the 100T, but I suspect the SB300 has a bit more midrange although that could relate to the extra headroom affecting the cabinets. Plus I have not played around much with the controls yet, and I have to remind myself that my 100T has Winged C and JJ tubes in it. Must make it clear that I am not saying it is a "better" amp than the 100T and there will be plenty of times when the 100T will be going out. The SB300 will also allow me to run the 215 and the 610 together at two ohms, in the unlikely event that one would not do the job. Not going to bother too much about comparing the two heads now, just happy in the knowledge that I can get the tone I like in most situations.
Which 50's RI P did you get - the 51 with a single coil pickup? I have an original '68 Telecaster bass with the single coil, same as the 51and man does it punch through.

Just posted this on the Orange AD200 vs Fender Super Bassman 300 thread:
Well, I have just spent an hour in the band room with playing both heads. Long and short of it is I can definitely get an Orange vibe from the Fender, the active channel on it is very versatile and quite intuitive - even with its frequency sweep. The Orange is great but cannot do all the the Fender does, although what it does it does superbly. The Orange is going. I am quite happy with the SB300 and the 100T for smaller gigs.
Also thought you all might like to know (since this is primarily a 100T thread) that if I could only have one it would definitely be the 100T. The SB300 has a little too much power for some gigs while the 100T still goes plenty loud - as a great proponent of headroom I never thought I would say that! I just consider myself fortunate to have both in the armoury :)

Worth a headsup - my neo 610 developed a buzz. Pulled off the grille and thought it was the right front speaker. Pulled it out and there was a piece of velcro strip in the cavity, the type used to hold the grille in place. Removed it and all seems fine now, although I suppose it could also have been a lead vibrating as I made sure they were well clear when I replaced the speaker. I was surprised that the speaker screws/bolts were not very tight on all the speakers, but I suppose the wood compresses after the initial assembly tightening.
