The Fender Super Bassman 300 thread

OK Rod, the question you must be expecting.......how does the NV215 compare to your stacked pair of Fender neo 15s?
Well after one gig (& a bit of a drought coming up for big rig gigs) as you'd expect. .. a little tighter. ..perhaps the sealed cab biz. .. and the mid driver let's the OD shine nicely.
The Fenders , some might think- strangely.. seem more 'vintage' (mind you, I rarely use the tweeters and if I do, no more than a quarter up) & sorta rounder. Not QUITE as punchy and I s'pose, msg have a little hole where the speakers meet the tweeter - or not quite meet. I don't really notice that, but did notice being able to bring out the OD -on the OD channel- more easily, with more clarity I s'pose.
Both really good punchy round 15s. I think I'd like the Berg a little more at the mo, but definitely wouldn't consider it any step down taking the Fenders. Being easier to lift etc. .. makes em a nice option too.

But, I digress. ... I'll say it aggenn ... tis SUCH a great time to be a bassist. A veritable swarm of amazing bass amps, cabs, combos, FX, basses. .... with the amps & cabs especially being lightweight, but still sounding great. .....& if you do your research. ..great reliability and after sales service.
Believe it or not, I consider the Super Bassman to be darn lightweight for SUCH an amazing sounding 300w all tube amp. The VR that I was gonna get, is at least 20lbs heavier - & to me, I weigh 69kg... that's a fair difference! Plus. .. the sound. .... oh the sound. Incomparable imo.

I've had my Super Bassman for a year now and we are still headover heels in that stupid teenage love phase (butterfly's and feeling giddy). This amp totally extinguished the 30 year quest I had been on for the perfect grind tone. So many pedals, bi amp rigs, cash and time spent over the years. Haven't bought a dirt pedal in over a year. This amp pays for itself and we are In love.

Yeah. I know. I try other amps. ..ones that ppl on here say have plenty of heft and thickness to each note. But. ...compared to this. .. not a show. Not anywhere close.
And I'm talking 600w to 1200w amps of all classes.
Nothing comes close. Imo

My two cents:
I love my SB300, apart from two things:
1. The weight. .........Ok, yes, it's lighter than an SVT, but still bloody heavy IMO.
2. The overdrive sound..........I've tried and tried, but just don't feel the love for it. It's nowhere near as nice (to my ears) as an SVT overdrive. It's just a bit too "fuzzy" for my liking.

If you want to get closer to that SVT overdrive sound don't use the "overdrive" channel for overdrive, rather use it as an alternative eq, then dime the master and crank the volume to suit. Leave the gain on the overdrive out of it. There are a few recommended settings earlier in this thread to nail the SVT clean sound.
Agree with you it is still heavy even though lighter than an SVT. The heaviest by far of my four tube heads.

Just took delivery Friday of a new to me Markbass TTE500. No overdrive channel (and for the record I love the OD tone of the SB300) but it does do a very good job of that vintage channel (IME, IMO, YMMV, etc)
For 300-400 people venues I reckon a Super bassman would be overkill. A 100T would be the better choice.
Have you tried swapping pre amp tubes to 5751s? Smoothes out the od tone ...then you can fine tune it with the sweepable mids etc

I actually like it far more than the svt pre amp od.
If you CAN crank em up & use the power tube od. Yes. ..the Vintage channel is beautiful. . So is the SVT-VR

I'm reeling my bass related spending back in after years of wasting money on (some) gear. I'm a lot more careful these days before I open my wallet.
Nup... no recordings. Only one I've got is a studio one being mixed now. And that's all fully clean.

Yep. Mic'd and DI'd. The final mix is more mic than DI though. There's a link a few posts above with the final mastered track if you're interested.
