The Fender Super Bassman 300 thread

Has anyone used the Super Bassman 300 pro with a GK NEO cab? Specifically the 4x12. I just ordered an SB300 (stoked) and this is my cab of choice/the only big cab I own right now. So i'm hoping they make a nice match. I will know in about a week, but I thought it'd be cool to get some info from people who own the head. Any advice or information would be much appreciated.

Yeah, it's pretty much gonna suck. You should just swap me for one of my extra neo 410 fender cabs. :hiding:


Of course I'm just kidding. I certainly don't know from personal experience, but it should sound fantastic. Please report back once you get a chance to run it through it's paces. :bassist:

Because of the advanced electronics of the biasing system the SB300 is overall quite a bit more complex amp than the designs of the last century so there is a higher general risk of failure. Not related to workmanship per se, that is.

If you really want to be safe wait a year or so, by then any serious systematic design and/or workmanship isses will have popped up and accounted for in new production units.

Amazing head. Sounds so great through the Gk Neo 4x12's. Only downer is that the red jewel light does not work. I bought it used from musicians friend and this info was not provided. It was in the "lightly used" category.
Otherwise it sounds perfect and functions as it should. Has anyone had this problem? Seems like it would be an easy fix. I'm gonna keep my eye on it for the next few weeks. I have 30 days to return it if need be. But for $540 off the regular price I could deal with a broken jewel light. The hassle of returning it and most likely not being able to get another at that price just doesn't seem worth it to me.

I had Paul Tollini (Scabbey Road) make me this 2x15 Dually and do it in blonde-tolex looking Duratex - it's a Greenboy design. Nice.

I sent a note to the seller (who has perfect feedback). He said he got the amp from a Fender endorsee. Says the box has never been opened. Presumably, the warranty card is inside and the next buyer could register it. But the "chain of custody" here worries me a bit, as does not having a retailer for support if needed. The price sure is attractive though.

Never mind on the above question. It ended up selling for $1,350 plus $30 shipping. I'd sooner buy one here on TB for roughly the same money, or just pay another $400 to a retailer for the added confidence and protection.

Quick update. Unfortunately because it was a MF "floor model" the fender warranty was not valid. BUt I have 30 days with MF and they wound up having another floor model, same price, but the blonde/oxblood color. Which I am totally ok with. I'm not one who care about looks. If it sounds huge, thats all I need.
If the problem was just the jewel light I would have kept it, but it lost sound a few times while trying to take it out of standby. After closer examination of the box, its pretty obvious that UPS used the roll method to move this thing a few times. I asked MF to double box this one and put extra padding. So fingers crossed it gets here in working order.
Otherwise, I fired this thing up for the first time at practice with the GK Neo 4x12 and it was incredible. This is my first all tube head. And it was a toss up between this and the SVT. I'm happy with my choice.

Thanks for your honesty Tim1. Your reviews and enthusiasm about the 300 in this thread is what led me to buy it. So, let me ask your opinion. Would you keep the used 300 provided the amp functions correctly in the first few weeks. Or would you just send it back and get a used SVT (new one) for around the same price, maybe $100 more. The warranty would be the same on the SVT. No factory, just a 30 day MF. I know that the SVT's have a good track record and I would be happy with the tone. Its just not as versatile and a bit heavier.
These are pretty much my two options right now. I cannot afford to pay the extra $500 for a new one because I have an EGC bass being built that I will meed to pay for in a month or so.
I'd love to hear anyones's thoughts on this as I'm kinda torn right now.

Having owned both I would go for the SB300, but I would ensure the SB300 got a pretty good workout in those first thirty days. I say again that I have had no issues at all with my 100T or Super Bassman 300, and there seem to be have been minimal bias issues with the SB300 anyway - perhaps because it is wired differently in the SB300 than the 100T. However, your comment about issues coming out of standby with your first one raised a red flag with me. I think you have done the right thing sending it back and if the replacement oxblood has no issues I would definitely stick with it.
The SB300 is a tone beast and gains huge pluses also in my book for weight, grunt and versatility. Also Fender seems to be on top of the autobias thing now (finally). These really are exceptional amps.

Sorry to hear that there's no warranty. Didn't know that being a floor model voided it. No matter who makes it, if it's new or near new....... I would not purchase any amp without a warranty. Which ever way you choose i hope it works out.

IT's a 5 year warranty, that is transferable, if the original buyer, buys from an authorized dealer, then sells it to someone, endorsing over the original sales receipt to the new buyer, the warranty works. (in my experience).
Seems MF could help you make this happen, though I don't know the details of your transaction. i.e. it was a trade in to MF or a return to MF etc. Good Luck!

Thanks Jerry, and everyone. I just paid for the gold coverage. Totally worth it. I want to enjoy the head, not worry everytime I take it to a show or practice. Kinda weird that they didn't offer it to me when I bought it.
As far as the 5-yr warranty, I'm not sure why MF voids that. Probably to sell their coverage. But this particular head was sold as "used". And under that policy it states that 30 days is your return window if something is wrong. Even after the MF coverage the total comes out to a little over $1400. Which is more than worth it for this head. I would have been bummed if I went the SVT route.

Congrats and good choice. That OD channel is something else, maan. To me it sounds terrific in the mix. About 5-6ish drive and 6-7ish blend slots me right in leaving lots of frequencies available for the other instruments. That breathing space has bought new clarity to our sound. The tuning of the overdrive circuit seems to complement the two guitars, drums, etc. The SB300 works better for me than my old much loved SVT-VR, plus it can be matched with 8 ohm cabs which is a bonus.
