I've not had any bad experiences with tubes- in 40 yrs!!
But sure, tubes ain't what they used to be. Almost nothing is. Apart from this great amp.
Agreed- with the minimal difference that power tubes make on the sound I'd just go with the most reliable set that you can afford.
I've had MY SB300 for a year and have had a couple of 'temporary' orange lights on the bias lights but the amp seems to re do itself and is still fine. If it were any other tube amp I've had over the last 40 yrs, I simply wouldn't know about it and would be using it as normal- pretty much as I am now.

I think with a tube amp. .. If it sounds good, it is good holds true.
