The Fender Super Bassman 300 thread

Fwiw... I'd look into any quality 5751 pre amp tubes. Doesn't have to be NOS .

Not a HUGE difference when I swapped em but definitely a more smooth OD from the drive channel and, unless my ears deceived me, from the vintage channel as well

+1
Of all the late model Fender bass amp that I have had, I have always swaped out V1 and/or V2, and the crunch/distortion has always been smoother, I have used the JAN 5751 made by Sylvania/Phillips, bought 7/8 of them when the prices were reasonable

so i've re tubed the amp, and all the tube are lit except for the 12at7 in the power amp section. Either i just cant tell that its lit up since it's slightly different than the 12ax7's or there's another underlying issue here... what's your guys thoughts? i can show a pic too if that helps.

Has anyone tried experimenting with the bias setting temp control? I upped the warm setting to max and it quickly got it roaring the way I like it, dirtying up the vintage channel even at low volume. I've always believed with my tube amps that the amp sounds better and better the hotter the tubes got, I think this feature is awesome!
I can't imagine that the range of temp control on this amp would vary the lifespan of the tubes that much, even if it does it's worth it to get the sound of the tubes running hot straight away!

My auto bias thing went on the blink soon after I got my SB300. Bad module. I had it replaced under warranty and it's worked great ever since. Love that amp, but the weight sometimes bums me it out. It's not the sheer weight of it that bugs me, but the bulk! Navigating doorways and twisty stairwells to get to the practice area/stage has resulted in more than a few scraped nuckles and pissed off back muscles.

But wait!

Digging this grab and go Bassman (500)! Compared to the SB300, the Bassman 500 is like watching a movie on your iPhone/iPad compared to your 4K flat screen in surround sound, but it's still pretty nice.

If I can swing it, I'm keeping both. (Class D) Chip off the old block.

I have an Ampeg SVT CL & VR which I think are heavier than the Fender but I solved this issue by getting a hand truck that can also flip down flat. It makes transporting all of my gear including my heavy amps so so easy.

I looked at the price of replacement tubes and immediately set mine to the coolest setting!
Now you have me thinking that I should try the hotter setting!

Here's the settings.

OK, good so describe the sound 'howling' like a hound dog? Or a wolf? or a coyote? If a tube was microphonic or some component was oscillating it wouldn't stop. Have you returned the head or exchanged it? Something very queer here.
