The Fiesta! Telebasstard

Loves me that "Bumble Bee" yellow and black.

I'm trying to get a handle on just what the overall attraction is here, and have to say that for me it's the simplicity of the original design. i.e., single pup, coupled with the playful colors of the group you first posted.

Earlier, I suggested the straight, rather than angled cut of the PG, as debasser has also mentioned, though the angled cut is in keeping with the playfulness that I think is essential to the original appeal (for me). A Darkstar would work well a straight-cut PG.

I, for one, don't care for the two-color pickup, nor for the reverse placement. A standard P pup in black on a limited choice of PG colors and the bright "Fiesta" color scheme, and I can see a market supporting the $400 to $600 range. That would be when you move manufacturing overseas. :)

Fun, simple, accessible. Use a good tone wood (alder), and a reputable after-market neck (Mitey Mite, All Parts), along with a choice of pickups (1/4 pounder, EMG, SD Antiquities), and I'd be in line for one.

Band Dad: I was also thinking in the $400-$600 range. Maybe this summer, if people are actually interested, I could build 3 of these, 1 for me, and 2 for other people, to see how it could work out. Haven't done much rendering today, but maybe some more tonight!

I too like the angled pickguard (hence why I made it, lol). I like spicing things up just a little bit to make them more interesting to me.

If this was ever to actually be mass produced, I would want it to be like the original Mustang (the car). Affordable, lots of options, etc. I think that would be so cool...

Would you be willing to mock one up for me in a transparent walnut color with a maple fretboard and b/w/b pickguard (straight at the bottom please) that has a darkstar pup in the bridge position and a dano lipstick pup in the neck position?

It's be cool if only the top portion of the darkstar was cut into the pickguard, much like the bridge on an actual tele.

Is that an American Standard Tele ?

I left two more options I was throwing out there.

Glad you guys like this so far! Flea is trying to do this? Oh man! Should I give him a call? ;)

Betty Bass: I wasn't sure what other things you wanted, but here is attempt 1 at Midnight Wine. Lemme know what you think, I'll start writing down the color combinations so I have them.

kb9: yours is up next dude, but I'm goin out right now!

etechstan: I'm sure it wouldn't be too hard to make a logo that didn't have that on there, haha.

Band Dad: How cool would that to have MY bass on the market? I mean, maybe I could pay off college loans! Perhaps I should call up Fender, haha.

Trevorous: nice! I've been playing for about 8-9 years, probably couldn't tell though.

Notice the rounded, strat-like arm rest, and the top contour as well. The part of the bass that would rest on your leg is also more rounded than the other edges, because I hear Tele's are uncomfortable to play sitting down.

So I can make exactly what you want to see, here's a little thing:

Body Color:
Rosewood or Maple:
Painted headstock?:
Pickup Colors:
Hardware Colors:
Pickguard Colors:

Man, I HATE wine BUT, I would buy that in a heartbeat... great work!

You guys sure are keeping me busy, haha. I'll update with more combinations when I get the chance!

Very nice! Very close to what I'm looking for. I'd be happy to actually pay you for a render if you'd be interested since I plan on having it built - if you're really going to build this model, I'd be interested. BTW, I designed logos for a living many moons ago at a fancy schmancy ad agency - maybe we could trade services? :)

Well keep in mind, my renders are merely mockups, not perfectly accurate or anything! This isn't CAD, it's made in 3dstudio max, a more artbased program. If all you want is to see what yours would look like, I ain't gonna charge you for a render, I mean, it's my hobby, it's fun to share, and I've been doing it for all these guys anyways!

I'd love to be able to produce these, but wouldn't even know where to start. It's not like I could do a mass production of them or anything, I mean the idea was it was pretty much gonna be a parts bass! If someone wanted one this summer or something though, I certainly wouldn't screw them on price...

Sarnz,

Thanks for all the work. Quite a lot of positive feedback.
The design process is so much of a product's success, and it seems to me that you've designed into your bass a very difficult trait to capture: simplicity. I have to go back to your original post to remind me of just what a great idea this is.
Perhaps you should be posting your ideas in the luthier's corner. You might as well familiarize yourself with the build process. I did see a recent thread whereby a fellow TBer did a commendable job of finessing the body contours on a home-build.

Body shaping, contouring, etc.; custom pick guard design through one of the companies that TBers often recommend; a quality paint and finishing process; Mitey Mite or All-parts neck, checked and adjusted for fit; a baggy or two of trim and electronics (control plate, pots, pickups, tuners, knobs, wire, strap buttons, etc.); secure and protective packaging; UPS tracking number. That should just about do it.
I'd but that, I'm sure. I'll have to check on a list of parts prices for a simple P bass.

Oh, and sound clips.

Love this thread!

That's sweet! Thanks a lot band dad, it's really an awesome thing to hear that people dig my design! I think that the hardest part for me is going to be the paint.

I will definitely head into the luthier's corner to check things out. I still have a few months before I will be able to do any serious work (still in school) but this will be an interesting summer project. I have a little bit of experience in body shaping as I have 'customed' some electric guitars before. But on those I did not try to get a nice paint job (one was an 'end of the world' guitar)

That Flea Bass looks sweet! I was wanting to do a green / pink one as well, cus my first girlfriend always told me to render 3d models of the cars that I did in that combination haha. Hey, maybe Flea wants to work with me! :)
