The first LEGAL tab site?

MXTabs.net opened to the public recently. It's an interesting concept -- they're supposedly the only free tab site that's actually legal. They get permission from the publishers to have songs appear there, and they pay the publishers a share of their revenue from banner ads.

The tabs themselves are still user-created, so there's no guarantee of accuracy. But they do have a way for you to post your own corrections.

Yeah, yeah, tabs suck, I've heard it all before. But I still think it'd cool if it succeeds.

Check it out:

MX Tabs has been around for a long time. They were down for a while recently while fighting a legal battle with the record companies. They're not new, just newly reopened. They used to have a lot of great tabs on their site, but now since they're "legal" a lot of the good stuff has been taken down.

I dunno if ultimate-guitar is actually legal, but if I remember correctly, it's based in a different country so it sorta avoids any legal action.

But then, I might be confusing it with a lot of other things people enjoy that's technically 'illegal'.

Edit: Agh, the guy who sucks at bass beat me to it! Oh well. I still don't see how tabs can be illegal. That's like saying sites like GameFAQs, or places that have video game walkthroughs, is illegal.

What I find really lame is that even if there is a tab up for a song, I can't get at it because apparently I'm Canadian. I get this:

License Restricted

We're sorry. The song whose tab you are trying to view is not currently available for display in your country (CANADA).

This current test version of MXTabs is restricted to tab displays in the United States only. We will be expanding territories in which tabs can be displayed in the near future.

I remember when MXTabs before it shut down, definitely my favourite tab site. Heck I even contributed a whole bunch of tabs.
