The first thread on Talkbass?

I can't help you with the very first thread, but I guess I'm not the only weirdo who uses this:

TalkBass Forums - Off Topic [BG]

I too read through it. It seems that it only had 2 moderators for the OT forum. And only 3 had pages. Hmm seems TB users where more serious 12 years ago
About playing their basses that posting stupid theads about the history of the site they are posting on.:rollno:

Wow, John Turner discussing politics in ot. Shame shame...

yeah, that was before i had to make the rule forbidding it. the first time. :)

we then, a few years later, tried to allow it again, but again proved untennable.

owned. nice.

lol. i actually enjoyed discussing politics and religion here, back then, when folks knew how to discuss things without being confrontational and argumentative. but unfortunately folks joined who would rather cause a ruckus than have a good conversation, and so such topics were ended up being more heavily moderated and eventually banned.

we were able to discuss things even a bit pointedly back then with one another, because, due to the smaller (much smaller) size of the board, folks sorta knew each other. like there's a post in there where i'm pretty caustic about telling a younger kid (who was whining about how "america sux") to get a job and quit his whining. something like that now would "light up the boards" in the mod forums/helpdesk.

Actually, that used to be allowed here until it got out of hand.

yep, and in fact almost any kind of posting was allowed at first - there were no mods originally, and paul only stepped in on rare occasions to close/delete any ugliness. the number of mods, and the number of rules, only grew as the site grew and more kinds of folks started joining.

as for the first post on tb, that'd be on an entirely different kind of board - i'm pretty sure the original pre-ubb board was something paul rigged up on his guest book. none of the posts on that board would have been archived on our current setup, but they may be in the way back machine somewhere.

an interesting aside - i was the first DB mod (after paul of course heh). my role as a mod over there was pretty much just keeping things even keel, (i had very little to share except questions that was worth anything :D ). after a little while i suggested that chris fitzgerald and don higdon become moderators, since they were both very accomplished players and could offer more to the community than merely janitorial services (the limit of what i had to offer the db side :) )

After a little bit more digging from where you left off, I found this

http://www.talkbass.com/forum/f74/see-if-i-can-do-right-4585/

Actually seems to fit the bill as the first post on what we now know as our glorious TB. Not seeing anything about the pre-1999 TB though.

The last couple of times a thread on this came up, the thread that you found was the oldest that anybody could find. So while it is not the first thread on TB, it is the oldest one in the database.
