The Flaming Lips

Love - The Soft Bulletin
Really Like - Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots
Kinda Like - At War with the Mystics
OK With - The Satellite Heart (and what I've heard of other earlier stuff)

For a little while, they were probably my favorite band on the planet, but seeing them live (2004 I think) was a _huge_ disappointment and that bumped them down a few notches.

Are you serious??? I've heard that they give AMAZING live shows. I'm going to see them in about 2 weeks and I can't describe how excited I am. What about it was that bad?

I'm 40, and my 25 yr. old bandmates are Lips fanatics. So I've heard Soft Bulletin, Yoshimi..., and maybe one other. I appreciate the creativity, I think Wayne is very cool, and I very much dig a handful of tunes. But I just can't get into them as a whole. Even for mellower stuff, I like more underlying balls than I hear in the Lips, or at least evidence of a capacity to rock out. I think the cover for Yoshimi might be the best ever though.

I saw them at Coachella 2004 and it was a huge letdown. In a set of 40 minutes (which would've been longer if they weren't playing with all of their effects), WC did a ton of talking, crowdsurfing in the giant bubble, got the entire audience to sing "Happy Birthday" to Beck's then unborn child:rolleyes: and played/sang a total of 2 real songs amid all the BS. It might have been more counting instrumental stuff, but the only songs he sang were "Fight Test" and "Race for the Prize".

And before you say it, I don't get drunk and don't do drugs.

I had a great time at the festival, but it was the low point. Seriously. I'm still a fan, I've seeen other shows of theirs that were better but man...that sucked.

Yeah I don't blame you for not liking that after you described it. Hopefully that was only because it was a festival because I'd really like for them to play some tunes. Although, the two songs I'm most looking forward to are "Fight Test" and "Race for the Prize".

I'm sure they'll play many more tunes for you. I'm all for theatrics...I just wanted more music. They're still one of my favorite bands, don't get me wrong. :)

Just heard about the Flaming Lips and man! I'm totally hooked! I got the Yoshime album and it's just so great. Currently listening to the Soft Bulletin album, but i think I like the other one better.

Can anyone suggest any other similar bands?
