The Great Carol Kaye

As good as you may feel that Kaye is, she has asaulted the memory and the legacy of the man whom most consider to be the Father of modern bass playing. I don't care what else whe may do good that comes across as really BAD
Well, this thread was SUPPOSED to be about her playing. The OP had specifically asked that we put aside the "Motown credits" issue for a change. So much for that idea. :(

IMO the above statement is why you get along with her.

That is not why me and Carole get along,we have a mutual respect for each other and for the record,I'm my own person and I don't bother her about the track issues because it's nothing that I'm concerned about and I have mad respect for Jamerson as well, again I was not there when the sessions in question were going down.I have talked to Carol about all types of subjects and we've had our moments,Carole is who she is and the tracks controversy will be here I'm sure when all of us are no longer around.

she is and always will be (to me who has never met her) an arrogant self-righteous 'whatever' :crying: Don't like her as I said earlier. Why she has to adopt/employ arrogance at her so called professional level is questionable. She should be struck off the list of successful bassists,as she has much work to do on her personality and respect for others.:ninja:

Yeah, Ty Cobb was a real jerk too. As are lots of professional musicians, but I don't see this amount of animosity directed towards them. I have to wonder whether Carol is getting more than her share of haters because she's a FEMALE jerk?

I have so much respect for CArol as a player. She's played on alot of great stuff. I know she played on alot of demo's for Motown songs that were eventually played on by Jamerson , unknown to her. Her credits are messed up , so what. I still think she was pretty awesome.

She could sacrifice babies to the god Crom- you still couldn't look back at her career and not say she was a very successful bassist.

"the tracks controversy will be here I'm sure when all of us are no longer around."

I think she would like to have it that way but I also think that myth has been sufficiently debunked many times over in books and award winning movies. An I noticed you weren't interested in knowing who everybody else is. It is OK.

There was something someone said about Carol playing on some tunes that LATER got played by Jamerson. He would have no more copied her than slit his wrist. IMO She probably did remakes of Motown hits that Jamerson played on as she has stated "the parts were written out but she changed them", and by the way this thread is in the "recordings [BG] category and that makes this topic right on the money again IMO

I thought about the part in the last post that infers that this topic will never go away and I had this revelation. In this "recordings" section of TB there is a "sticky" for Jamerson talking about his recordings. Some one comes in and says CK did IWMTLH and then the snowbball effect. First thig you know there is a CK thread (and believe me that is OK) and some one says CK Motown recordings and though it doesnt get very specific anymore as to saying which tunes we all have heard it before so we (think) we know that this someone is talking about Bernadette or IWMTLH. It is automatic the snow balls are coming fast and furious now LOL

One could say that there is no more controversy if you just look at the evidence and listen to the music. This notion of Jamerson coming in copying CK's line for Bernadette, IWMTLH or ANY tune is got to be the most asinine suggestions in the world. Think about it. Go listen to her bass only tracks at her website (these are "recordings" arent they? on topic...) then go listen to the Beach Boys "recording" of IWMTLH recorded the same year as Stevie's version.

The one she did on her site sounds more like "the notes" than the "recording" she did the very same year as Jamerson's Stevie Wonder "recording". After 30 years of listening to Jamerson she may have it down pretty good except for the pick sound which can clearly be heard on both her 1967 BB recording and the one on her site. Jamerson's version sounds very different. She may get the notes but she will never get Jamerson's feel. Especially in 1967.

I'm out see Ya'll at the next meeting... I gotta go play some bass...

Time to unsubscribe on this one.

I thought this thread was for being positive about her work.

As for any particular tune she may or may not have recorded the final version of - who cares? Take every tune in dispute out of the equation, and she Still contributed more to modern music than most people who ever picked up a bass.

I'm amazed at how much energy musicians can spend throwing stones at each other. Life's too short for that.

Over and out.

Here on TB we usually talk about how much guitarists suck and how they can't be good bass players. I think you violated a rule or something.

Kidding..

The lady has skills and played on a lot of good records.

:)

I grew up listening to and enjoying the body of work that Jamerson shared with us,for a very long period of my formative years, pretty much all I heard was Jamerson blasting thru my parents stereo system, radio, neighbors etc you name it, Jamerson's Bass lines were in my head in some shape, form or fashion, again I have mad love and respect for Jamerson and he is a big inspiration to me,so much so that the way I feel about Jamerson is how I feel about Chuck Rainey, that's one of the reasons I chose to show my appreciation for Chucks contributions and his impact on me as a Bass player to do an entire book with some of Chucks most empowering Bass lines.

Bah! This is a myth that Barbra Streisand once tried to propogate as well. I remember her saying something like, "If a man is like I am, he's called a good businessman and tough negotiator. If a woman is like that, she's called a bitch." Bullsballs! There is as much animosity directed toward someone like Axl Rose as there is someone like Carol Kaye, so I think that blows your theory apart.

+1. I'm outta here after this post too.

I love Jamerson too, he's a hero of mine. And his reputation is SAFE, regardless of how you feel about Carol Kaye's claims. The fact that I love Jamerson doesn't prevent me from showing appreciation for another bass player's body of work, especially for her hundreds of recorded tracks that are NOT a source of controversy. I don't get why people are so opposed to discussing THAT. (Especially in a thread where the OP specifically asked us to discuss THAT). It makes my brain itchy.

I'm a Jamerson superfan that is pretty sure that he played on Bernadette and IWMTLH (and the other Motown hits in question), but I also admire Carol kaye. Go figure.

I find Carol Kaye to be an interesting character - sweet when you're on her good side, but mean and vindictive when you're not. Oh well. Her personal skills may be lacking, but she's a great musician nonetheless. I still like her playing, and her musical legacy is intact. She's been nice to me, but then again, I've just interacted with her about music education, a topic of which she loves to share.

My most vivid memories of her playing were from TV shows I watched when I was a kid. The most memorable was the bass line from the Brady Bunch theme song. Of course, I didn't know it was her, but I liked the line. I remember that the bass line sounded very guitaristic - actually, at first I thought the instrument was a low (baritone) guitar. Being the attentive and perceptive kid I was, I noticed the bass lines from Mash, Mission Impossible, Hawaii Five-O, Get Smart, Addam's Family, and Love Boat had a similar style. Later on, I found out that Carol played on all of them.
