Lovecraft's biographers say he was pretty racist even for his time. He was also rabidly antisemitic, which is ironic because he married a Jewish woman. But in his mind she wasn't really "one of them".
I can strongly recommend "The Ballad of Black Tom" by Victor LaValle. It's a very different take on "The Horror at Red Hook" which is at once one of Lovecrafts best, creepiest, and most virulently racist and xenophobic works. And "Ballad of Black Tom" is a really, really great read.
