I just picked up a new sr400qm for 339 today from guitar works its super solid.

but the clear plastic thing that tells me what the dials do should i take it off?

Congrats on your purchase! I'm thinking of buying a SR400PB (the limited edition) myself; I can't seem to find specs for it, but when I tried it in the shop I could swear the neck felt even thinner than a regular SR
Yeah, of course you should take the plastic piece off; that's just to let you know what each button does.

I know Believe me, I know (I've played a Fender MIM for years). The reasons for which most ppl badmouth Ibbys are: they simply can't understand that it's possible to have a good stable neck without using a baseball bat for a model (so they keep bitching about how flimsy and thin Ibby necks are); they don't like the idea of a company that offers some of the features that are generally considered to be high end (exotic, woods, figured tops, good quality electronics and hardware, etc) for a moderate price (take the SR500 for ex - beats everything else, not only in its price range). Last, but not least: lots of ppl prefer to trash before actually testing stuff.
So be proud of what you have, enjoy playing it, and next time you hear someone praising a Squire over an Ibby smile and keep walking

saw the exact same one in a righty in a guitar center months back. i tried it out. i wasnt that bad.it was older though. i think it just needed some touch ups.

Wow I wish my starter bass had been as nice as some of those y'all have... But now to business, here's my new baby, my first venture outside of vintage/passive land, an SR-400 I nabbed off of craigslist:

Actually cured more of my GAS than I expected, It has a great range of tones with having the 'style' knob instead of a mid control. Hasn't replaced any of the others in my stable, but may be the only modern bass I need for a while... Until I can afford a Spector Euro 4!
