Yeah! That's exactly why I bought it! The Roadstar 5 strings were produced briefly in '85 and '86 (they changed the design in '86 and at which point, it looked more or less just like a Soundgear). They had 4-string pickups and necks, just a different headstock and bridge so the string spacing is really narrow. It's such an awesome bass (although right now, it's not set up too well and it has crappy strings on it...haven't gotten around to changing them). And it looks so black metal!! :bassist: When I have a bit more money and time, I'm going to get it playing smooth and clean...like it should be!

It's a little tricky, how thin the neck is for 5 strings. But it's a Roadstar! And I love Roadstars...

I'm sure the Ripper copy holds it's own, and maybe the Precision copy is close to a 70's Fender P, but I've owned an Ibanez Jazz copy and several Fender Jazzes, and the Fenders won hands down. Like I said, Im talking about mid 70s fenders which are the ones they copied. I owned a couple and sold them all to keep these two. Owned a minty 78 siennaburst jazz, a 77 natural jazz. Sold the natural to a fellow tber nice guy. The ibanez jazzes are pretty much the same, a bit brighter sounding than the fenders. ive had three different fender ps: 75 (with barts), 76, and a 78 (all stock) and a 68 mustang which is a mini p in itself. These sound rounder in my opinion, less attack, didnt cut as well. The Ibanez Precision cuts more and is more responsive in my opinion. maybe I got 4 or 5 Fender lemons but I doubt it. And as far as todays fender j and ps, its hit or miss, although they stepped it up this year.

The rick well, Ive played and had 4003s borrowed for a while and it hits it right on, not as good as the p and the js but good enough so that you cant tell on a recording and on stage.

And the ripper that is something else. That may be the best 4 string ive ever played. IT HURT to let it go. Talk about growl but heavy as a truck, and one of the most versatily passive basses I've come accross so far.

As for today's Ibanezes, Im looking for a sexy fretless 5er or 6er to complete my lineup. Considered getting a roadstar II 5 string and defretting but that is going to be as hard as finding these 4 I put together and the Ibanez Thunderbird I've yet to come up with.

Here's my old fretless (neck-through, multi-lam, active, yadda, yadda, but sounds and feels fantastic). Bought it new in college. I forget the model number - MC9794?

I also had a 1982 or 83 Roadstar single pickup model which was nothing special compared to my fretless.

I have a few IB guitars, too.
