Thinking of changing the pickups/preamp on my 97 SR406. It's a bit quiet, and not quite as defined as I'd like the sound to be. I love the Bartolinis on my 2004 SR505, so I was thinking Bartolinis for this as well. Any input? I've heard that Ibanez pickups are generally pretty good, but the preamps are nothing special. Should I replace pickups, preamp, or both? Any suggestions welcome!
I've recently upgraded the pups/preamp on my SR370F. it had CAP (ibanez own) pickups and Ibanez preamp - I've replaced it with bartolini MK4CBC and 5.2 A/P.

Not as far as feel goes, at least not yet. But I got it mainly because I want to learn tapping and I've heard the neckthru's have more sustain to them. But the neck certainly has the Soundgear feel to it (thin and fast).

I recently bought an Ibanez. But I have no idea what model it is. Either it's a GSR with an SR neck which happens to have the same finish (white pearl, I think. You can't really see the sparkle in the pictures.) on both parts, or it's some unknown model that's been discontinued or wasn't meant to be exported or something. There's no model number stamped with the serial on the back of the headstock. All I know is that it's Korean and was made in 2003. It came with a flight case and a set of new strings for £60GBP and I love it whatever it is.

Howdy, I'd like in the club! '00 SR400, modified SG (uncertain pedigree), '09 SR500. So in love with the feel and look of the 5, I just have to pick it up every day. I totally credit it with me going from total noob to Not Completely Terrible(TM) in the last year or so. The 400 lives in the truck with an old Bassman for "Sure i've got my guitar!"

Noob question: does the 5.2 mid knob have a 3 position pull on the knob? This will be my first hardware/electronics upgrade and I'm not exactly sure of all the details. Also, did you try the preamp/pickups separately? Just wondering which might influence sound more since my budget is also a concern.
2 position. Nope, didn't try separately. My other 2 basses have decent pups from the get-go, but I'm upgrading preamps there too. Ibby's preamps is where they save money. If budget is a concern, try changing either first and see if it works for you.
OK, so they're only two position? But then how does the mid knob switch between the three frequencies? The model I saw had three mid choices, does yours? Am I missing something? Thanks again for the help.
Again, another noob question. Wouldn't having the a/p switch nrgate the point of an active bass? I get it might save a show if your batteries die amd you go passive instead, but isn't it limiting? I've aleays been drawn to active basses, passives never sounded as good to me. Do you notice a significant difference between the two settings? I'll double check on my computer tomorrow, but I thought the mids were 3 way, at least on my specific variation of that preamp. Anyway, thanks for the help and your patience.
Nope, you just get an extra option. You don't have to use it, but I figured it's nice to have, just in case. Actually, you'll find that a lot of people her on TB prefer passive sound (I'm not on of them though).

waiting to find a new tuner for it, but also can't find a serial...the neckplate is Blank...
Tuners say: Ibanez, Velve Tune, (any help on a replacement part greatly appreciated!)
is it MIJ? Are the serials printed anywhere else on the instrument?
Oh, and by the way can I be a member now?

They just got in a used Ibanez Musician at my local GC. I was surprised at how heavy that bass is. Didn't get to hear it very well - kids wailing on fuzz guitar all over the place.
Yeah, I know plenty of people prefer passive, but I'm with you. Active all the way! Anyway, I think I found the source of my confusion: this diagram from Bartolini.

It clearly has 3 mid options. Is that how yours came? Are you able to use all 3, or did you intentionally leave one out? I've just never seen a push/pull pot with 3 positions. But, since I'm clearly new to bass mods, for all I know there could be tons of them out there (and probably are)! And if I understand you correctly, the A/P switch is mandatory? Not that it matters much, I'll just have it on active all the time, just gathering as much information as possible before I dive in to this new business.

EDIT: Just took another listing at this preamp on bestbassgear.com and it has it listed with or without the A/P switch. With costs 5 more bucks, but hey, there's one of my answers.
