ok I was looking into buying a new SR5005E OL , but have heard bad things about the pre.
Iknow some of you know way more about this kind of thing then I do, will it be a problem or is it just junk ive heard on the internet from Ibanez haters?
im stuck on my sr's and love them , and would hate to find out that i would have to switch a pre amp on a $2000 bass right out of the box.

There are only 2 things I have disliked about any Ibanez I have played:
1. Their proprietary preamps sound 'fake' to me, digital and cold.
2. I don't like bartolini pickups and a lot of their higher end basses use them and some have bart preamps.

I have converted actives to passive vol/vol/tone/tone (or volume/blend/tone for 3 pot setups) and I found they sounded great. I used .047uF or .037uF capacitors for the tone pots.

You did all that as opposed to admitting Ibby basses are not your thing and moving to something that would perfectly fit your preferences? :D


For the record: I simply can't understand why some folks expect to get their tone one hundred percent from their bass - do you guys plug your bass directly into your ears? Don't you use amps, cabs, preamps and anything of the sort? :)

I love everything else about the basses (body shape, thinnest neck I've ever played, the tone of the woods used, solid hardware...etc) and I solder stuff at work all the time so it was only about a half hour of work and like...15$ worth of parts each on 2 basses (both SDGR's) I gig a Spector right now which is almost a perfect fit, but I have NEVER played any bass with a neck as good as an Ibanez. Ever.

The ones with the Bartolini pickups I just tried out and didn't buy.

In my opinion, all 3 pickup types you listed have their own different characteristics and would be more based your own preference than which would stack up to each other.

The Ibby standard pickups are pretty even response overall, bartolinis are more dark deep and woody, and EMGs are pretty punchy bright and aggressive.

Your experience may vary however. I find the 3 types different but all have their strong points, depends on music style and personal preference. Preamp or passive controls will also affect the tone of the pickups. This is all IMO, YMMV.

I've played my SR 500 side by side to some SR 300's and SR 400's and it blows them out of the water. No comparison whatsoever. With the SRA models that have the EMG's, they do a little better but I actually prefer the tones of the SR's over them.

I'll back up Mr. Ralston up above with his SR comments. I used to own both an SR305 with the stock pups and a 506 with the Barts. No comparison. The 305's pups were weak and were ruled by a mostly thin, mid ranged sound (very little growl) in comparison to the 506's much cleaner, beefier sound. The pups on my 305 also struggled to properly reproduce the B string's sound. It was always much quieter than the rest of the strings no matter what I did. 506 never had problems with that.

I have an Sr5006e incoming I should have next week. i will let you know about the pre when I get it in hand. Also, you can get a 5005 for way less that 2 grand. My understanding from being an Ibanez fan site moderator is that Ibanez dealers pay about 1700 for the 5006e, so the 5005 would be less still. There's a 5005 in the classifieds here with an Aguilar pre at a reasonable price, too. You could probably buy that with confidence as well, because NOBODY is paying 2 large for an Ibby and then beating it up ;)

But then again, for 2k you could buy this!!!

That guy's channel has several videos of him playing his SR5006 and several playing an SR4000. Listen to a few and decide for yourself if the tone is what you're looking for.

it is just hate buying without playing < and the closest I can get at the shop up here is an SR 705 or my 405 , and im sure the 5005 blows them both away!!
Was also kinda kicken around the idea of a BTB 4 string but wont know till I found out how much money im getting.

Ok first off THAT DOUBLE NECK IS FREAKIN AWOME!!!!!!! , prob weighs a ton but its still cool !
And im prob just gonna go with my instinct and buy the SR5005E ol , also ive heard not sure that the only pickups you can get to fit in a newer SR are BARTS , without routing and stuff?
And not sure 100% but I think the SR5005 on here is sold already.

WAS thinking of just biting the bullet and buying a DINGWALL lol , but ill stick with the sr for now.
