The Ibanez Club (Part 6)

Anything is possible for Ibanez Bass Workshop line, although it would be no longer within the Crossover theme. The SRC is meant as the Crossover instrument for a guitarist wanting to go to the bass player theritory or a bassist wanting to go to the guitar player area, hence, the 6 strings, tight 10.8mm spacing, and EADGBE tuning.

I tried tuning my 7 string bass BEADGBE cause I wanted to play chords using guitarist finger positionings, but it didn't last long. Despite the BTB7 has the needed tight string spacing, the 15.5mm spacing just wasn't tight enough for guitarist style chord finger positionings. Thus, it led me to get an SRC6, which I still keep for years despite being the least played bass in my arsenals.

Would I get the SRC6MS? Maybe, but probably not, as I've learned that chording is not exactly easy on a multi-scale instrument.

Yeah, I totally get it. It's just me selfishly wanting an SR short scale because it's my fav body style. :) The SRC6MS seems to be priced at 799 over here in Europe, which is a nice price point as well.

This might not be too easy to accomplish, but have you ever tried tuning your 7 string F#BEADGC?

I had done low F#0 tuning with Rotosound .175T on a 6er (F#BEADG) for a year or so. It even translated to my 1st fretless. Yes, it wasn't just put the strings on and played. I had to get help from a bass tech to file the nut slots wider.

But even after a year I still found the tuning wasn't useful for me. More so that the .175 low F#0 was still too floppy on a long scale bass. So, it went back to BEADGC tuning.

Would I do it (again) on my 7? No. Although, it could be yes if only I owned a 37" (multi) scale.

Nice Elite!

Have to say I am a bit disappointed in the 2023 Ibanez bass line up. Too much fanned fret basses for my taste. Not much new models and no new signature basses.

I like the Elites the most but they have been there for a while now. Would be nice if they would make Elites also in other finishes. What do you think?

From what I can see on the Ibanez website, there's only 3 new multi-scale basses? Two of the 3 EHBs and an SR.....unless I'm missing some?

There are still the carry-overs, of course, like the srms800/805/806, the Iron Label SR, BTB605MS/805MS/806MS, and like 7 of the EHBs.

I do agree about the finishes though - except in my case it's for the multi-scales.
It looks like the closest any of them come to a red color is still the "Brown Topaz Burst" on the srms805/806 :(

Yes, but overall they seem to focus a lot on multi scale basses for the last two years. I think the market for multi scale is less than normal scale, but I might be wrong?

It seems to be the popular thing these days, not just with basses (I'd like to have one myself.....), and I'm sure they wouldn't keep making more of them if they weren't selling......but all the multi-scale basses I've seen have been mid- to high-end, lower volume production stuff. No cheap or cheap-ish, high volume, mass-produced versions, afaik.

Ibanez has a massive range of bass models, over 130. 15 of them are multiscale, about 12% of the basses in their USA catalog. So while Ibanez has a lot of multiscale basses, they are still a relatively tiny part of the product line.

The headless EHB line is dominated by multiscales, so they do stand out there. And I think in general we are drawn more to new product announcements and to the middle and upper end items generally, which is where Ibanez has been slotting most of their new designs, so they stick out to us more than they would to somebody shopping for a bass at a guitar store.

Yeah, I think the crossover bass is a fascinating concept, but was surprised to see the introduction of a multiscale model. Especially considering that the 6th string remains at 30", the same as the previous singlescale model. Perhaps the thinner strings sound better as a result, but I figure the fanned frets will also add a great deal of confusion when playing a more guitar-like style.

That said, the SRC6MS is a pretty special instrument, and I'd certainly like to test one!

I think it's a pretty smart move by Ibanez. Dingwalls have only been gaining in popularity and there's a huge gap for new multiscales in the $1000-$1500 range. I think there's a ton of people who want to try MS but cant afford or dont want to shell out $1800+ for a Dingwall.

More options are always nice. I looked at the SRMS last year but wasn't crazy about it. I ended up buying a Dingwall 5 AND a SR306EB. Im happy with both but worked for me probably wont work for most. If they had a more mature product maybe i just buy an MS Ibby. I can definitely see myself buying one in the future.

I went back a couple pages and didn't see it mentioned, so... UB805 5-string electric upright!

I swear I've seen pictures or video somewhere of a Japanese-market UB804 in a trans black or gray finish too, possibly with a flamed maple top. Not sure about the top, but definitely in gray/black

EDIT: Found it. That didn't take long.
UB804-BUL Black Ice Burst Low Gloss finish.

This is cool.
I really dig my UB804. It's a ton of fun. :bassist:

For the rest of us (without four-figure budgets) the SR300E Midnight Gray Burst looks good from the photos. Due in next month, and a supplier will email me.

Should look rather nice with black tapes on it. Time to start saving?

I own one of those in "Black Pearl Fade". It is not a bad bass guitar at all. It has an "easy access" for the truss rod. Nicely thought out and executed by Ibanez.

that neck width looks substantial. more evidence to contradict the “skinny ibanez neck” misinformythos
1.6875” at nut
(P Bass players would like this)

2.125” center E string to G string at top of pup.

I’m pretty sure all the Artcore models are the skinny neck exception since none are made by Cor-Tek.

As I understand it they have always been made by Samick first in Korea for initial production and then in Samick’s facility in China.

Can’t recall where I read this but I definitely do recall reading this somewhere with somewhat ‘official’ credentials.

Of course that source can be wrong or I could be remembering incorrectly or both.:wacky:

I have an Ibanez Portamento SRF-706. I had a knob fall off at church. Didn't notice until the next day. I went to the church and searched around and found it had rolled under the riser. When I went to put it back on, I found that the set screw was gone. I have looked around locally and can't find a replacement. I found out what the threads are at Lowes using their thread finder. It is an M4x.07 thread. They only have imperial set screws though. I have found some online that have the correct threads, but are way too long. Any idea where I can get a set screw replacement?
