i want a musician
before i got my old kubicki i could of bought a musician with the two single coils, passive, the store had flatwounds on it it was hot, and i could of gotten an ibanez steinberger copy, cant remember the brand name, but it was XXXXXXX by Ibanez....should of gotten both of them....

I love my Musician. I decided to get it after playing my friend's '84 MC888 for five months until I could get my own bass. They're actually very different basses; they play similarly but sound VERY different. The EMGs in the 924 give it a much chirpier, burpier, barking bite, whereas the passive PJ in the 888 gives it more of a smooth warm, "recessed" sound. I have Ken Smith Compressors on the 924 to take off some of its edge, and KS Slick Rounds on the 888 to give me that P-bass with flats sound.
Thanks phxlbrmpf, I really do like the shape of this bass. There's an awesome ridge on the top, too. Not the most ergonomic of shapes, but you get used to it. The one thing I would improve would be the access to the upper frets; it's pretty hard to reach the 24th fret on even the G string without really reaching around the neck; that far up the neck, it's like trying to reach around a...around something really wide and awkward. Still, I love the looks of it, and I got used to the sharp edge on the top of the bass.

I got sick of riding around Southeast Michigan to try 6-strings (does anyone stock these?), so I thought I'd take a chance. I changed the stock Elixir strings to DR LoRiders, tweaked the truss rod and was ready to go!

Has anybody tried one of the new model Prestige 6 strings? I have owned 2 Ibanez 6'ers in the past,and they both had a little neck dive.Just curious about the balance of the new version.

SherpaKahn, Has that mc888 been painted? I remember those being natural finish walnut. I have been looking for one of those for years. I loved the "Bean" basses both roadstar and musician.
Did the tuners break on that? While I'm on that subject does any one here know where to find replacement tuners for old roadstars? I need
some for my rb885.

Here's my Roadgear 900:
I fell in love with an SRX700 which I almost bought, but I thought I might prefer this one so I ordered it instead. The quality on this bass is superb and it gets very versatile sounds. It's also cool seeing Rufus Philpot rock out on one of these stock Roadgear basses!

Tonewise, the Roadgears aren't as versatile as the Stingray's in my opinion. That's not necessarily a bad thing though, I've owned both and though I felt like the Stingray was versatile, many of the sounds were just not usable for me. I was very very impressed with these Roadgears. I actually prefer them over the Stingray's but that's just me, there are plenty of guys who prefer their Stingray's to Roscoe's and so forth.
I put my Roadgear up for sale not too long ago because I recently got another bass but for the price of these used, I just didn't see a point in selling it. If you can find them for under $500, which you definitely can, I think they're a steal. The quality of the construction on these basses is top notch. I still wish I had an SRX500 or SRX700 sometimes, but I don't really see a point in picking one up unless I happen to run across one again that I fall in love with. Once these Ibanez's are set up properly...I'm amazed by how nice they are. I had my Roadgear for almost a year now and it was only supposed to last me for a short time until I found the bass I really wanted. Every time I'd go check out a new bass, I couldn't justify purchasing it because I didn't hear $1000 worth of difference between that bass and the Ibanez. So even though the Ibanez has been replaced recently, it took a SIGNIFICANT price hike in order to do that.

Well, as far as I know, Black was offered as a finish on the 888, 824, 924s, and more in the early to mid-eighties. And yes, one of the tuners was poorly repaired a while back, and I stepped on the other one and cracked it off. The worm gear from a mismatched Gotoh tuner was swapped for the old worm gear; the gear ratios were different, and by the time I opened it up, the tuner barely worked.
As for replacement old Ibanez parts, you're usually better off moving on to other replacements, as these parts are a bitch to find. After six months of searching, I just found a guy with a set of chrome Smooth-Tune tuners, but I think I'm gonna opt for a set of black Gibson tuners like the ones in the classifieds right now instead. Ibanez parts are a pain to find, and Ibanez bass tuning machines are among the toughest parts to find, in my opinion.
I do like the shape of this bass, although it took a while to get used to. It's sure as hell a lot lighter than my 924: the difference in weight between the two is enormous. I dig the 924 more because it's actually mine, whereas the 888 is on long-term loan from a friend, but I can't deny that the 888 is easier to play in a few ways.

This RD is a very good bass for price ($499). With American made Bassline Pickups, it sounds clear and powerful. You can get nice P-bass sound with front pickup.
Please note that this bass is on Ibanez recall list for battery wiring. ZZsounds, Samedaymusic, American Music supply are selling without fixing it.

I'm not trying to be a wise-*** asking this, it's an honest question: why would you want to cover up a portion of a beautiful bass like that with a pickguard? If it wasn't part of the original design, to cover up the cavity below, why mess with it? It's beautiful right now.
