I view pick as just another technique. I don't use it often but it can help with harmonics and false harmonics, and it also gets a different sound - harder attack and quicker decay. I keep a pick on all my basses and end up using it maybe once or twice a night, usually only for part of a tune. I slap a little more often (but not much), use palm mute a bit more than that, but typically fingers.
The twin of the fretless showed up today.
Very nice! Do you know how the neck through Smiths compare to the bolt ons? I have a bolt but it's the only Smith I've ever tried.
OH man! Your pair photos are giving me major GAS! Those are gorgeous basses. I'm a big fan of the fretted-fretless pair thing (currently main axes are pair of blueburst USA G&L L2500) I'm just dying to have a fretless version of my solid maple fretted Smith 6 string. And you aren't helping in the least! drool
I've owned three Smiths. The first two were bolt ons and they were both very nice basses. After those left, I got a neck thru. Totally different instrument. I loved that bass and wonder why I ever sold it.
I'd love to get another Smith but I only ones I'd consider at this point are the neck thru's.
I had a bolt-on 6-string and have played a few others. Not sure I have enough experience with them to make sweeping pronouncement but with other basses bolt-ons typically have a bit more attack and punch, neck-through is a bit compressed and sometimes sustain. Smiths seem to have a bit less difference though as the pickups and preamps have a strong voice so the construction is less of a sonic issue.

As has been mentioned, you don't see a ton of fretless Smiths around, but I can't get enough of mine. That "Ken Smith Sound" really translates beautifully to fretless, IMO.

Saw this yesterday on Ken Smith's Instagram page, thought I'd share. Kinda interesting, a Smith singlecut prototype.
It took me 11 months and giving up another bass that I really love but I am very excited to have this bass on it's way to me....
Does anyone know anything about the Ken Smith Design Burner Standard (Ash) and the Ken Smith Design Burner Deluxe basses? Are they pretty decent basses? I'm sure they are the assembly line version of a Ken Smith, but Musicians Friend is having a clearance sale on them today for $499 (Standard) and $599 (Deluxe). It would be nice to know if they were worth it since I am in the market for a bass right now.

Those are the offshore models I believe and reviews are mixed, some unfavorable some say adequate but not great. I'm sure if search you can find some I read some awhile back.
