I've been wanting a smith for that last 12 or 13 years. I'd sort of forgotten how amazing they sound until I played a friend of mine's CR 6 a few months ago. Ever since then I've been on a mission to find one that was perfect. For me, I wanted something a little simpler looking, chrome hardware and two piece body. Lo and behold the exact combo came up on the classifieds a few weeks ago.

I need to take some new pictures but here's the one I bought! My band loves it. Even my wife who's jaded to my bass purchases had to admit how great it looks and sounds.

hey outta curiosity has anyone ever played a smith that dosent sound like a smith?

i have a friend thats selling a smith, and i played it before, and honestly my peavey cirrus sounded more like a smith than his ken smith......it was a bolt on model btw..

if the smith bass has any mods the tone and sound will change,but a smith is its own,it can be detected on any gig with out seeing it.yet the peavey cirrus is the only bass i've heard that has a tricking effect:bassist:,great bass if you want that smith effect with out the price tag

The only Smiths I've played that don't fully sound "like a Smith" are the models with jazz pickups (BSRJ's)...those still have a Smith flavor, but it's mixed with a more traditional jazz tone. A couple of the best Smiths I've played were this model. They are getting harder to find now though.

I had a Peavey Cirrus that definitely had a Smith tone - I fooled many people using that bass in the studio. In general though, Smiths are a bit more focused than the Cirrus basses which are a little more wide when it comes to frequency range.

I picked this bass up from the classifieds right here on TB. It was actually kind of an adventure. Since it was the most money I'd ever spent on a bass, I decided to make a day trip out of it and drove to ATL to pick it up. Got to meet the seller, a very cool TB'er, Rev.Dr in the process. I know he ended up buying a nice neck through Smith after the sale.

yeah it was! lol! i guess the seller saw this and took the ad down, but i live in atlanta and was searching craigslist last week and saw this....

Hey guys im looking for a 5 string smith..now whats the main diference between the bolt on model and the necktrough (besides the price).... i also see two switches in between the knobs on the necktroughs, what are those? thanks.

I'm not too sure on the new models - are you talking about the new Hadrien Feraud Signature Burners? I believe those are 17.5 mm, but I thought they were only offered in 5 strings.

The switches you're talking about are the series/parallel switches for each pickup. They definitely offer a bit of tonal variation.

As far as bolt on vs neck through, with Smiths specifically the bolt ons have a very similar sound to the neck throughs (assuming you are talking about bolt on models with the standard Smith soapbar pickups and not the BSRJ's.) I would say that the neck throughs are a bit more smooth and refined and the bolt ons are a bit more snappy, but there's alot at play when you're alking about differences in basses. Actually the biggest difference that you'll actually hear could come from the fretboard - most Smith neck through fretboards will be made of ebony while most Smith bolt on fretboards will be a pau ferro/morado. The ebony boards have a distinctive "ping" on the attack of the notes that you won't hear on a pau ferro board.

if you look on bass centrals website, they have the new ken smith design burners up. i had a chance to play on e and compare it to a regular ken 6, and its a tad bit narrower than the regular kens...

Nice! I didn't realize those were in production now, I had just seen the one HF sig with the buckeye top.

Those are great looking basses - what's the tone and the electronics like?
