I just made it official, I mailed off my order/payment and a set of Gotoh tuners to Kevin today.
Cool. Are you getting fretted or fretless? If fretless, hope he still has a chunk of that nice tigerwood that he used for mine and Pete's fingerboards. Have a nice vacation.
Got a quote from the Krapmiester for an 8 string bass, normal sized non-touchstyle with 18mm string spacing and a bodystyle of my design. This should be really cool and fun, I love that 10 string bass he just posted on the site.
That tigerwood (Muiracatiara) is commonly available as plank flooring. Just slide a plank out of the box and start making a fingerboard!
Absolutely fretless for this Owl. It just ain't an upright (albeit a hybrid) if it ain't fretless.
The wood he typically uses for the fingerboard on the Twiggy is Brazilian Cherry.
Definitely looking forward to a week in the beauty of upstate NY.
Catskills? Adirondacks? Finger Lakes? I live in the Hudson Valley area...I guess anywhere in the state beyond New York City & Long Island, is considered Upstate. Always nice to sit on the deck and pick some music, and enjoy fresh crisp fall air and the changing leaves this time o' year.
We'll be looking forward to your progress pictures from K.. as I was quoted, it's like looking at ultrasounds of your baby in your woman's belly. A little krappy fetus, turning into a bass . very exciting
This crisp fall air is a beautiful thing indeed! I'm in Gilboa NY, Scholharie County. What a BEAUTIFUL night sky too! since I'll be up here until Saturday, hopefully I'll get to hear some of my feathered friends. I bought the Schecter 5 string with me for some jamming and possible recording.

You can hear it on the song "Czerwony pas" (krappy kover of a Polish folk song) at Link Removed - it's the distorted track. I think I used the three-string neck.

Years back, I used to hang with some wild & crazy musicians from Schoharie County: Sam Whedon & the Mack Soto guys...Duane the left-hand fiddler...the Rubber Band. Good times and good music. A little hard-hit economically, but Schoharie County is still a beautiful piece of nature.. I know it well! Gilboa, Margaretville, Breakabeen, Grand Gorge, etc. Used to do that whole stretch of Rte. 30 from Middleburgh south thru Schoharie County, and into Delaware County and to the headwaters of the Delaware River. God's country, for sure.
Used to be a guy with a hot dog stand in Grand Gorge who claimed to be Elvis's twin brother Jesse. Did not die at childbirth as the story goes, but was given up for adoption.
Had pictures pinned up of himself on the Mike Douglas Show -- was on national tv with his story of being Jesse Presley. Who knows, maybe it was true. Wonder what ever happened to him?

New e-msil today, he's got the woods cut to rough shape alreasy. I'll post pics after I get back. The wood selection is 2 types of Mahogany, Maple and the Brazilian Cherry fingerboard.
I decided to dispense with the 'factory' roundwounds on the Twiggy-3 and switch to flats. I first tried a set of GHS Precision Flats, only to find out that the wrap length was 38". As the Twig has the same guitar tuning machines as Kevin's many-stringed touchstylers, too much string ended up on the headstock.
After some consultation with the tech guy at GHS, we determined that their 'medium' scale set, with a 34 1/2" wrap length, would fit. This was the GHS Brite Flats medium gauge. Juststrings.com, one of the forum sponsors, got them to me in just 2 days.
Perfect fit. The leader end of the E-string (.108") was a little tight getting through the hole in the tuner, but a little coercion with some pliers did the trick. I allowed just over an inch to wrap the leader 'round the tuner head, and this was just about right.
With the bridge and headstock both being so small, plus the little tuners, we have to be pretty careful with scale length. Many thanks to Dave Cowles at GHS. These fit well and sound most groovy.

and as I told you, I had to more or less jam the E string end through the hole with pliers - just enough to grab when i wound it. How are the tuners on your fingers... ? Could I interest you in a Kustom Patent Pending Krappy Tuning Wrench ?? : )

Only one of my tuners is stiff. Even so, I can still move it. The other two (E and D) move fine. A little twist with a peg-winder was all I needed.
