The Last GREAT band

+1 and -2 to Muse
probably the best mainstream (by "mainstream" I mean obviously commercial, not just popular) band out there (but look at the competition). There are worse bands, but I don't find them particularly interesting (all IMO of course--I'm sure that there are some Muse fans out there who might be able to convince me otherwise).
there are tons of great bands out there if you just look (some of them are popular enough that you don't have to look very far, even if you won't find them on the radio)
The White Stripes
Mastodon
Skeletonbreath
Radiohead
...and to many more to name

..and as far as being fairly prolific while releasing solid album after solid album, I'd have to give a nod to the Foo Fighters. Hell, they got to play in front of the President...
That would be my first thought too, but i don't think there will ever be a last great band.

rick is one of the coolest guitar players ever, and mary always brings it on the bass.
I'll second Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and the Foo Fighters.
I've also been listening a lot lately to a metal/hardcore band (with some obvious Southern influences in there) that's done amazing things for three albums in a row: Maylene and the Sons of Disaster. Check them out if you haven't already, if they continue at this same pace they will become a GREAT band.

This is pretty silly really. However, I will say Madvillain, just cause I'm listening to them now
