The Last GREAT band

+1 and -2 to Muse
probably the best mainstream (by "mainstream" I mean obviously commercial, not just popular) band out there (but look at the competition). There are worse bands, but I don't find them particularly interesting (all IMO of course--I'm sure that there are some Muse fans out there who might be able to convince me otherwise).

there are tons of great bands out there if you just look (some of them are popular enough that you don't have to look very far, even if you won't find them on the radio)

The White Stripes
Mastodon
Skeletonbreath
Radiohead
...and to many more to name

Rose Hill Drive
The Answer
Back Door Slam
Radio Moscow
Buffalo Killers
The Steepwater Band
Wolfmother

There has yet to be the Last GREAT Band. These guys all kick major rump. I've seen Rose Hill Drive and The Answer in concert (opening for the Who and AC/DC respectively), and they were definitely on par with the main acts. Seriously awesome.

I'll second Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and the Foo Fighters.

I've also been listening a lot lately to a metal/hardcore band (with some obvious Southern influences in there) that's done amazing things for three albums in a row: Maylene and the Sons of Disaster. Check them out if you haven't already, if they continue at this same pace they will become a GREAT band.
