Everyone's opinion is going to be different based on what style they are into.
Personally, I think there are a ton of amazing underground bands with great bass players. There are probably even more great bands that no one has heard of.
In my area alone, there are a lot of 'local legends' and 'the next best things'.
Does the ability to pack any venue with no advanced notice make a band great? Or is it what the band says in its music? Or is it the band's level of virtuosity in its playing?
Funny, I was thinking about this towards the end of my run, which was made excellent by In Rainbows.
It's Radiohead by a mile. No band like that before... and a bunch like them after... including Muse. If they're the last great band you might as well give it to Kings of Leon. Come back in four records and see if either band has evolved and set trends like Radiohead.
in addition to Radiohead as a "last great band" (rock and pop) I'd say My Morning Jacket, Wilco, Drive-by Truckers and, yeah, Kings of Leon on that list somewhere, too. Maybe Umphrey's McGee.
But I'm in agreement with Basskababble - no band "has evolved and set trends like Radiohead."
I agree style will dictate a lot of the responses.
I don't think packing the house means anything at all. Baloney outsells steak, popularity doesn't mean your any good at all. do we consider Ashley Simpson great? she can pack a house, so can Tila Tequlia.....
Me, I would choose Weather Report. The sheer number of overacheivers that played in that group make it stand out, guys were rotating in and out all the time and the quality of musician was just fantastic.
