The Last GREAT band

When I think "Great" I think about not merely good musicianship songwriting or live performance but also their lasting influence. How many bands exist today because these bands inspired some kid to pick up a guitar and play? With that in mind.....

The Beatles
Van Halen
Metallica
The Smiths
The Clash
Radiohead
Faith No More (Jim Martin era)

And my personal vote...... The Ramones.

All pioneers to a certain degree

The newest band I can think of would be the likes of Gojira. But they started in the mid 90s. Came to be more well known around the early 2000s though. I'm sure there are plenty of new bands now that I just won't hear about for another 5-10 years. =P

that link is actually dave grohl playing with paul mccartney's backing band..it was a ceremony for mccartney receiving an award from the president i believe. doesn' t change anything though, dave grohl is still one of the most important musicians around today.

but as for the last GREAT band, i definitely have to go with anything steven wilson does (porcupine tree, blackfield, etc). when is he going to get the respect he deserves?

My advice is not to start with Kid A... As great as it is, it will not be the introduction you need... Personally I like to start listening to new bands from the beginning. Pablo Honey and The Bends are great records, front to back, and will only prepare you to be blown away by OK Computer.

With a lot of bands the first album is a good way to get an introduction. But Radiohead change so substantially from Pablo Honey to The Bends and especially OK Computer that I'd actually start with In Rainbows. If you dig the latest album, then I'd go back to OK Computer and the Bends before hitting Kid A and Amnesiac and then Hail to the Thief. To me, Pablo Honey is interesting to go back and see where the band started but every album after it is a quantum leap forward from that first record.
