The Last GREAT band

I think the idea of the thread is the LAST great band, meaning a band that has been recognized as great, artistic, influential, commercially successful, in recent times -- last 10 years probably makes sense.

IMO, some of the bands mentioned, like Rush and AC/DC and Metallica, I'd happily put into the "great rock band" category. But they established their "greatness" quite a while ago.

I guess we all have very different definitions of "great". To me, greatness requires some longevity and influence. Popularity is great, but not at the expense of integrity. So I eliminate any bands that haven't been at it for at least ten years, had serious critical and commercial success, and influenced bands that came after them. Under those criteria, Radiohead is the most recent to accomplish those things. Before them it was Pearl Jam.

Lots of bands have been highly influential in their genres.

Never been a huge Radiohead fan, but I can understand why many others dig them.

I really think The Dear Hunter is doing something particularly creative and I find myself listening to them often.

Yeah, I'm definitely going to agree that you need to define "band" and you need to realize taste / genre play heavily into this. If you don't like metal, you wouldn't care how good the band is or the even the bassist, for that matter. In terms of great bands with good bass players that a lot of people would agree on: Muse, Tool, The Mars Volta, At The Drive-In, Radiohead, Clutch, and Incubus.

+1 on Soulive and Lettuce, and yes, yes, on Stanton Moore Trio. Really loved seeing that trio by themselves at the Blue Nile in Nola, and then that trio (with diff guitarist) joining Anders Osborne at Mid-City Lanes. Love seeing Stanton with anyone, including his day-job band, Galactic.

I'll be seeing Soulive and Lettuce at Bear Creek this weekend. Saw those two bands (and a bunch more) plus Robert Walter Trio there 2 years ago.

I'm very jealous of you right now.

Well, I'm going to have to go with Green Day. They are the only modern band I can listen to right now. Oh, and Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers.

There are a few GREAT bands out there, but none from the West. I go for great grooves. It takes years of constant gigging to get a great band groove and this is no longer possible in the West.

Ulytau -- Kazakhstan

Fusion of hard rock and Kazakh folk music. The violinist is outstanding. These guys could show the Mahavishnu Orchestra a thing or two. Odd times like you never heard. Drive like a runaway freight train.

Indeed, this is highly subjective.

I think Primordial is a great band. Others who don't like metal probably wouldn't be interested.
