The Les Paul Twins

I'm preemptively envious of the future foster-parent of this, or the other twin. A true labo(u)r of love Christine.
 
I measure the worth of things by comparing them to tacos. Tacos on Tuesday are a buck. Do use my dollar on a minuscule chance of receiving a fortune, or do I use my dollar to certainly receive a taco?

Do I want to put that nicer bridge on my guitar, or would I like an adequate bridge plus fifteen tacos?

There's probably a reason I'm fat.
The only problem I see is that tacos don't keep-or reheat-very well.:smug:
 
I started the day with what looked like a minor glitch, I was spraying the tops of the twins when my "wonderful" spray gun spat out a bunch of blobs all over the bridge area of one of them. I wasn't best pleased as I go to extremes to clean it after use and always run a cup full of thinners through it before use. Anyway I did what anyone would do under such circumstances, I went for a sulk! :roflmao: The really good thing about nitro is that it is quite easy to repair, so with this in mind I ventured out to inspect the damage, to my surprise the lumps had gone, I looks like there was water in the air, not good, I need to get that addressed asap so it doesn't happen again. Relief and a lesson learned

So after that little disaster I continued spraying through the day, cutting back with 800 grit between coats, the cutting back became easier and easier as the day went on. I got a total of 6 coats on which is more than enough for one day, they will be left now until Friday and I'll have a good look at them then and decide if that is enough or do they need more, they are looking very good at the moment but I'll see how they react to a bit of time to let some thinners evaporate or whatever it does

These are stunningly exquisite.
 
Four more coats of gloss on the tops again today, I put the first two on with standard thinners and the last two with anti bloom to let the last coat flow a bit better. After about half an hour I pulled the masking tape of the fretboards. I think they are good now, they certainly look good (as in blemish free), the anti bloom should have gassed off well by tomorrow so I'll have a good look then to see if they are really done but I'm quietly confident tonight.

So for the first time here's a hint of the finished things, once I'm happy they are good I'll grab a quick picture upright before hanging them up for a week or two to fully harden

Could you post a picture? I'd love to see that. Quite bizarre but it is used as a cost saving measure by some manufacturers too apparently

(sorry, I realized this has been sitting due to being interrupted - it's from a few pages back...)

I've had a number of necks made for my custom basses using a scarf joint. My luthier does any type of neck he's asked to make but prefers a scarf joint. It's not really so much a cost-cutting device, but it does use wood more efficiently. It has a lot of advantages and done correctly is actually stronger that a one piece set-back from a single piece of wood. The break angle can vary and eliminates the need for a string retainer. Before knowing better, I assumed it was a cheap method and was not drawn to it's 'look', but now like seeing the joint so nicely bonded.

It's interesting that the joint on your neck is a lot nearer the nut than the one on my Epi.

It can vary, but the main thing is the neck and headstock can be cut from wood close to the same depth. It also has two grain patterns overlapped for cross reinforcement so less likely to bend or warp.
