It can vary, but the main thing is the neck and headstock can be cut from wood close to the same depth. It also has two grain patterns overlapped for cross reinforcement so less likely to bend or warp.

My faves in many ways - Sperzel locking tuners - US made, among the smallest footprint and lightest available. They come in a few variables (gold,matt silver, black, and anodized colours) and the paddles can be replaced with a variety of different anodized colour options. (red, blue etc) I've used them on a number of builds both modern and retro.

Four more coats of gloss on the tops again today, I put the first two on with standard thinners and the last two with anti bloom to let the last coat flow a bit better. After about half an hour I pulled the masking tape of the fretboards. I think they are good now, they certainly look good (as in blemish free), the anti bloom should have gassed off well by tomorrow so I'll have a good look then to see if they are really done but I'm quietly confident tonight.

So for the first time here's a hint of the finished things, once I'm happy they are good I'll grab a quick picture upright before hanging them up for a week or two to fully harden

2 Sanding sealer, 3 or 4 black (I forget) and I think 14 clear coats on the top and 16 on the backs

Last update for a while, here's the twins upright on stands just to get a better look at how they look. They are now hanging in an old wardrobe until they have hardened enough to be safe to handle without risk of marking the lacquer, somewhere between a week and eight weeks, I really don't know until they get there.

They look dandy on a Gretsch too

Aesthetically they do have a specific look which works well with some hs designs and would look off on another. They can be used 2x2 or 4-in-line by flipping the direction/side of the post/paddle. A very well designed tuner.
