The LOOPING Club

I've been practicing with a looper. I have a Digitech Jam Man and I've gotten good at my timing, but I'm curious about one thing.

I have been trying to create a loop. If I create a loop that's 4 bars long, is there a way to then record 8 bar's over it? I've tried, , but once I commit the loop to memory, it loses the 2nd 4 bars.

Do I have to create the longer loop, or play 8 bars of the original loop? Is there a way to just extend while playing?

I was thinking of getting another looper. The Jam Man (the original model) put some hum into the recording. I've tried adjusting things, but I can't get rid of the hum. Who makes a looper that doesn't add anything to the recording?

I have one of these.

Short answer:
You can only overdub the length of the original loop. 4 bars
If your longest loop is 8 bars, then all your overdubs will be 8 bars. You can not extend.

As for the Hum, try putting the Jam Man on a shielded power source or a different power source than your recording equipment.
May need to run an extension cord from another room to get on a different grounded source.
If you are recording via laptop, try recording on battery power.

I hope that this helps.

I also use a Jam Man, had it for a long time now. The guitar/singer also has a looper, the BIG Boss thing (RC 300?).
The band is just the two of us, so there is quite a lot looping going on.

That's cool. How are you able to ensure the two loopers are synced?

Before I bought the rc300 I contemplated using just three rc3 or digis or something so I could truly have three independent loops but I nixed the idea out if fear I would never be able to get them to play in sync.

For those saying that the recording of loops isn't all that important, that it's just like playing along to MP3's, I would point out that in the Infinity you have those two loop channels that you can play in parallel or in series, with their lengths synced. And of course you control it all with your feet. So it's more than just a superfluous feature you could have with your stereo/MP3 player. It's certainly not a necessity, and certainly not for everyone. But, again, not superfluous.

I'm not really trying to defend the Infinity over the Boomerang per se. I picked up an Infinity due to the great price available to me. The ability to record and the smaller footprint seem like advantages to me over the Boomerang, but it seems like there are a ton of other features that the Boomerang has that the Infinity doesn't.

I think the only ones that allow different length loops are the ones with multiple independent loop pedals. Boomerang and rc300.

Like I said earlier, the Infinity will do this. Two separate loops that can be run in parallel or series, and Loop 2 can be set to an exact multiple of Loop 1's length (like in the example that is being requested, you could set Loop 2 to 2x Loop 1, so Loop 1 is 4 bars and Loop 2 is 8 bars).

EHX has got a new looper out, the "Nano Looper".

The more I think about the Boomerang's buttons, the more they appeal to me. It would be great if Boomerang put out a simple, basic looper ala the size of the Ditto or a single boss pedal, but with that fantastic little toe-tap of a switch.

Sweet. I think that switch will def be a hindrance tho. I think a soft touch switch might have been a better choice.
Hey, we felt the same way! So we actually made the switch on the 360 a momentary soft switch. Even though it looks like the classic "latching" true-bypass switch, it has a soft touch without any click. If you've seen our Superego, it's the same switch as on that pedal.

Infinity switches are soft-touch as well. That might be why they feel more natural to me than the ones I've used previously (on Boss multi-effects and the Sanpera I controller for my guitar amp).

I used to use an RC-2 but I got rid of it when I got a Zoom B3. I've only used the looper with the drummer I jam with a couple of times but it has sounded pretty good. It makes me think about how long I run a loop whilst noodling because I don't think it would be that fun for the drummer to play along to a loop for more that a couple of minutes. It would be fun to get a slightly more feature rich looper and see what I could do with it.

off topic: nice zardoz avatar. that movie is a trip.

Not quite ready to join the club yet, but want to plug in here. I've been messing around with a boomerang for about a week now. Having fun. Not sure where I'm gonna go with this just yet. Have a beatbuddy coming in about a week, and looking forward to seeing what the 2 teamed up (with me of course) will be able to do.

I've had an on/off relationship with loopers
I remember how blown away I was from that possibility ... But was always disappointed from the results (my lack of consistency in learning how to use them)
I've been through the line 6 DL4, moving to the AKAI HEADRUSH, boss RC 20 then I got rid of the loopers..
Then I got back to the RC 20 switched it to a jamman then sold it then got a jamman stereo , sold it and then I saw the ditto .... What a great idea, just a small looper to play around with ideas, then I sold it .... Heheheheh

Now this thread is building up a GAS for yet another looper .....

The only time I ever took the time to build loops on different Chanels on the RC20 and play with it while overdubbing more bass ... Just from explaining I start getting confused

I even looped in some drums into each channel

It's crazy how lazy I became ... ;)
