Time to update again!

Earlier this year (or was it late last year? :confused:), I lucked into an MIJ "Foto-Flame" Jazz body. Here is it's current incarnation, complete with a Squier Classic Vibe Jazz neck and a Fender American Standard bridge. Personally, I'm really diggin' how the CV-J's vintage tinting works with the cherry-burst "finish". Mad Love for my professional/published artist of a wife for helping me decide which neck to use! drool :smug:

I know, right?! Sadly, I don't have it anymore…a decision I kick myself a little over every once in a while. But as long as I keep reminding myself "It's just 'stuff'", it's all good…

…at least, that's what I keep telling myself. :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

One of the interesting things about it happened when I switched it from roundwounds to D'Addario Chromes. Maybe it was the little setup tweaks necessary with the higher string tension, but I swear it breathed that much more life into those pickups…much louder and very, very beefy.

I'm curious if anyone else has ever noticed a seeming increase in output just because they switched to flatwounds.

Played quite a few & seen even more. Construction is rock-solid, and electronics very clean.

The necks tend to be super-fat, since the builder believes that typically that generates less fatigue when playing. I think there may be some models with shallower necks - but the typical/standard spec on these is the 'thick-grip' neck. If you think P-bass baseball bat is big/round, this is... fatter. Especially on a 6-string, wow, that was quite something! :)

Also, often the fingerboard radius is very tight, especially on the fretless basses (almost like an upright).

Necks tend to be very stable, and many come with carbon-bar inlays - though from what I know, even the all-wood necks have no problem staying true in the extreme weather fluctuations common to Japan.

Build-quality wise, absolutely fantastic, though many tend to veer towards the heavy end of the scale. There are a few semi-hollow ones floating around, which helps a bit with the weight.

Overall: very well-built & great sounding instruments. If the ergonomics would work for you, I expect it may well become one of your favourites ;)

That Foto flame reminds me of the rarities plasma red burst jazz

Me too. Even though it's still basically a Cherryburst finish, I rather-kinda dig the name "Plasma Burst". It sounds like something out of Star Wars.

In the end, I can't complain too much about selling off the Foto-Flame Jazz. If nothing else, the distinct lack of anything "Cherryburst" in my life led me to assembling this wee beastie…one that I'm more than a little proud of. :smug:

That is probably the most beautiful Jazz I've ever seen. Look at that color!
