Also, in talking to Paul, he briefly mentioned the TC bass, which I guess was shown at NAMM? comes with Nordstrand fat stacks, I forget which pre-, for a more modern/hybrid jazz. Wonder if anyone has seen it or played it at NAMM?

The Mike Lull Club Part 2

Let's get him, Paulie! Just let me sell my MTD first, so I can make enough to pay for the Lull.
Well, I did it! I swapped my passive SD PJ5 pups for a set of passive Nordy PJs 5 pups.
A fello TBer approached me (in a trench coat) and offered to sell me his custom ordered Nordys that were still unopened.
I liked my old SD PJ pups but was curious about the Nordy's after hearing Ken Jung's new Nordy P bass.
I picked up the bass last week from ATL Bass Gallery that did the wiring for me and I played the bass through a few of their different rigs on the floor. I mixed and matched everything from an Ashdown combo and heads, with AG 500 SC and SWR heads with Aggie cabs and a Bergie AE410.
Anyway, my first reaction as I played the bass with the new Nordy pups was positive. The pickups were definitely more aggressive with a wider sonic range while still retaining that P flavor. I felt the pickups made the bass more fun to play. Everything sounded a little wider and fatter, even at home through my small Genz combo.
I next recorded the bass. I had previously made a test recording with the old SDuncan pups and picked up the recording right on up with the new Nordys.
Unlike, the live, through the amp test, which left me in favor of the Nordy's, the recording test left me somewhat undecided, feeling that both brands of pickups had something to offer. Neither was better, just different. The greater sonic range of the Nordy's, pushed the sound a bit further out from Fender P-land. It gave the bass an even more progressive sound. The Seymour Duncans, on the other hand, sounded a bit more compressed and retained a bit more classic P qualities.
Both sets of pups sounded like P pickups, each with it's own unique flavor.
I'm keeping the Nordys on and will play live and in the studio before ultimately deciding whether they'll stay. For now, I kinda like em. They make me want to play the bass even more.

The color I'm "saving" for my Fretless M5, for lack of a better description, is a "Denim Blue" that truly does look like a pair of jeans. I saw it on a bass years ago for sale on Adrian Garcia's website (at a price that sold so low it still sickens me to this day
), fell for it immediately, saved it and have kept it "tucked away" ever since. I have somewhat of a tradition of my fretless basses: my first "starter fretless" was a 1992 Ibanez SR-800 in "Pearl Blue", my upgrade/"got schooled on" & DIY defretted it myself and installed matching blue fretlines using Blue Purfling for an Acoustic Guitar... which came out killer, and currently my Spector Euro Bolt-On with custom Nordstrand Big Singles, Aguilar OBP-3 & HG Thor Epoxy Fingerboard Coating beauty of a fretless bass being "Blueburst", so this would continue that while bringing "a new blue" to the table - "Denim Blue" with an Ebony 'board and matching headstock (not sure about Chrome or Black hardware, however. Chrome looks great in the picture, but Black, besides being "me" would match up nicely with an Ebony fingerboard)

What would you all think about this one, except it would be lacking the B string? Props to Bass Club Chicago, where this beauty currently resides.

^ I love the look of that bass. Mike charges quite a premium for blocks (and binding), so if you find one and the economics of the deal work for you, I'd totally recommend it.
$600 bucks list, to be exact, for the blocks. That might actually be before binding as well. I almost got 'em in my new one. Then I asked myself... Do I need blocks to play better? no. If anything, it takes a small amount of wood away from the fretboard. Does that really affect the sound? probably not. Does it look cool? Hell yes it does. I would like to refer back to the "you're going to loose sleep" comment.

It's not this one, but its like this one, 2-tone burst with maple neck.

Congrats Holdsg! I'm sure you're very excited. My fretless is that color as well with a tort guard.
I almost ordered that JT5-24 at the end of last year. For the work that I do, traditional pups make the most sense, though. BUT... if I ever have extra money laying around asking to be used for another bass, that would be it. Strangely, my next Lull "creation" might be to buy a Epiphone Jack Cassady and have him put the T pup in it with a nice PLEKing. It's always good to have a hollow body around. That little idea would get expensive though, and I haven't run that goofy proposition by Mike yet.

haven't got it yet. Didn't ask when. I suppose about another month. He has to design a pick guard for it and get a custom color. As well as routing a M5 for a P pup. Non standard stuff that might take longer. You will know the day I get it though, and I'm sure I'll do a vid review of it.
