The Mike Lull Club Part 2

I was chatting with a fellow TB'er about how my M4V is my main practice bass, and that I'd use it more often on gigs if I didn't rely so heavily on a low 'B' string. This bass is just amazing, and I love the way it makes me think and play. After last night's practice session, I figured I'd snap a coupla' pics. Excuse those (cough) lesser (/cough) instruments in there. :D Alder/rosewood, sherwood green, Fralin's & Bart NTBT.

If it takes more than one sentence to ask a question, then you don't know what you're asking. I think I heard Larry King say that. Maybe we should think about the # of strings we need on our basses in that same fashion...... says the dude who loves to flick chords on his 6 string all day! Beautiful bass Jerry.

Here's my favorite bass, a Lull passive J, have owned it a couple years. Don't know the weight but it's probably around nine pounds, a bit heavier than I usually prefer. The neck is really comfortable, has some depth & mass, it's not skinny. The fretboard is a really dark rosewood, you'd almost think it's ebony. Whatever Mike Lull finishes the back of the neck with is just perfect, woody feeling & glassy at the same time. Occasionally I get some minor fret clank, but that's probably due to my crude technique, I'm a bit heavy-handed. One of these days I 'd like to drop it off for a Plek job at Mike's shop to see what level of setup it's truly capable of. Acoustically and plugged-in the bass has a lot of bottom, really solid-sounding. When I got it, it had Ultra J pickups, liked them quite a bit, but a bit more scooped than I'd prefer. Just recently began experimenting with Area J & Nordstrand hum-cancelling pickups, they're all different shades of good, no clear 'winner'. It's currently strung with Sunbeams, might try flats on it for a change.

The actual color of the body is more of a royal blue than this pic indicates, not quite the purplish hue seen here. The original white pearloid pickguard wasn't doing it for me, so I went to a Paper Zone store for some patterned art papers & Mod Podge glue. My intention was that the pattern might evoke a Mondrian vibe, but it ended up looking like something Rick Nielson might use (if he played bass). Was a fun & easy project, might try some other patterns on guards I've got laying around.

^ That's the way to do it. Good man. :D My first/last order took just over two months. I believe right now the shop is riding a big wave of NAMM orders, so things might take a bit longer. That said, I was given a two-week lead time on the modifications I'm having done on my orange bass, so who knows? Always worth a call or email to confirm.

Well I odn't quite have the cash yet until I sell a bass, but I saw a Candy apple Orange Lull on the Bass San Diego site that looked amazing, but it sold before I could jump on it (apparently everyone wanted that one!).

What do you guys have for pups and pre-amps in yours?

M5V alder/rosewood: Duncan SC's & Bart NTMB (Vol/Blend/Mid P/P/Stacked B&T)
M5V ash/maple: Duncan LHB's & Bart NTMB (same as above)
M5V P/J ash/maple: Duncan 3/2 P * LHB J & Bart NTMB (same as above)

Hey guys, looking for some input. I have this V4, currently modded with an OBP-1 and Fralins. I have some birthday money burning a hole in my pocket and I'm considering one of a few upgrades (can't afford all of them). How would you recommend I prioritize these?

  • Plek it (1/2 price for un-Plek'd Lulls)
  • New preamp (Audere JZ6?)
  • Refinish to get rid of the big dings
  • Fretless conversion (probably too expensive and I'm not even sure I want to :eyebrow:)
  • Something else?
Not that I don't like it as is; on the contrary, I think I just want to give it a little makeover and then keep it "forever." :) Maybe even use it as my main bass. To do so, though, I'd want a little more modernity in the sound, but I could be barking up the wrong tree (and offending stalwart defenders of "vintage" in the process). Thoughts?

Hmmm...let's prioritize: you're after a little makeover, and a more modern sound, right? Based on that, I'd look at electronics. But even stepping back a bit....I'd talk to Mike. Maybe have him inspect the instrument and offer some thoughts and suggestions. It may not need PLEK'd...given Mike's stellar fretwork your bass may very well set up beautifully. How about a setup and a fresh set of strings, and you can make any future decisions based on that? Good luck...

Ah, the voice of reason. Sometimes I hate the pocket-burnination feeling of birthday money. :) Just need to step back and ask the right questions.
