I have always loved vintage radius basses and figured I'd want to order one. I went back and forth playing a P4 and a UVP4 at his shop and ended up liking the P4 with the 12" radius much more. Just my experience, but I think his stock P4 and V4 necks are the most comfortable and easiest to play of any bass I've ever had.

Besides, that's what Mike himself plays - a P4 with alder body in Aztec Gold, P width neck with 12" radius brazilian rosewood board.

I spoke with Mike a bit on Friday. I'm leaning towards the P4. If I end up ordering it, the only change I might make is to request the smaller, vintage frets. But I'm sure even his standard frets would be fine.

Yes sir -- I was the original owner of that M5V, and I also loved it! It is still the absolute best 5-string bass that I ever owned, bar none! Often, I wonder why I sold that bass!!!

Not sure if it was covered on the previous thread but I had literally a few minutes on the new 34" scale 5 string J at NAMM ( the booth was always swamped) and it felt great...very nice bass. Nice to have the choice.

I have a Lull V4, and soon want to get a Lull 5 string as well. I had my mind completely made up on getting an M5V. However, my curiosity has now lead me to become interested in the PJ5 as well.
I know the main differences between the two are that the M5V is an active bass with a jazz pickup in the neck position, and the PJ5 is a passive bass with a precision pickup in the neck position. I definitely want the alder/rosewood combo on whatever I choose.
Can you guys please give me some insight and opinions on these two basses? What are the tonal differences, and which would you choose? Also, I'm guessing the PJ5 is a little cheaper since it doesn't have the preamp.

I think the best way for you to initially think about these models is that the specs are just starting points. Mike will build whatever you want. You can have either active or passive in both. You can also put a P or reverse P in a M5V. 35 or 34 inch is now your choice. Ha, you could even ask him to put J pups in a P body.... Well maybe he wouldn't do that. The point is, as long as it's reasonable, you can have it your way. That's one of the major points in going with a builder such as Lull. Sorry if I'm being vague about your questions, but you just need to do some soul searching about what you want for a bass sound and style. Maybe an active PJ5 to go with that V4?

If I did get a P/J, I'd probably keep it passive, just because I've heard that Lull and Sadowsky both recommend for their P/J's to be passive for tone purposes. What are the benefits of having the reverse P pickup?

I hear you on keeping a pj passive, but Mike "always" gives a push pull active/passive option. It can be handy to have active, but certainly not necessary. I personally like to practice and record passive and sometimes gig active. Those videos I have in my signature can give you an idea of the different sounds between a pj5 and a m5v if you don't mind one being fretless and me probably talking too much.

As far as reverse p, some people like the treble coil of the p pup being more in the j position and the bass coil closer to the bridge. Many debate this, but I like it more traditional myself and like the sound.

I am very thankful you started this thread! I have just bought 1089, wich previously belonged to Nick Harmer, bassist for Death Cab For Cutie. I have wanted one for a long, long time but they were always out of my price range. May I please join the Mike Lull Club?

This is a direct quote from Sadowsky's website, under the basses overview section, pertaining to their Vintage P/J 5-string model...
"We recommend our passive tone control on these basses for the ultimate in P-bass-style tone offerings."

I took that as meaning a fully passive bass. Anyway, I know Lull's P/J bass comes standard as passive. And his P/J is a P-bass body. If I were to get the P/J combo, I would probably have a M5V made as a passive P/J in order to have the jazz body.

Their passive tone control (or VTC) is an option which does not exclude the preamp: it's basically a good old passive tone which works both in passive AND active modes.

Mike's P5/PJ5 basses on the other hand do come standard as passive, though you can always order a preamp as an option.

The Lull PJ I have on order is going to have a nordy preamp with a passive tone control. I am not a purist, I just like having the options. To me the benefit to extra cost ratio is pretty high.

there is a really cool Lull on the Low End Site right now...sort of a metallic green. I'm thinking about grabbing it, but hesitating a little because the body is Alder and not Ash.
