Mike's reverse-engineered T-bird pickups. To describe, think very agressive, modern, cut-thru the mix tone for a passive pickup it's quite a treat. Much like a Darkstar. I don't have the most discriminating ear. They just sound good.

Thanks guys, tone is tough to describe for me as well. These pups are thick and meaty, aggressive but very warm. I really like them. She's had a Bart pre in her since day one but this bass could really use a vintage tone control, then it would be perfect.

Mike's not shy about pulling out his old Fenders. Did you play his jazz?

no. his '59 is almost all original except for the refret on it. he replaned the f/b and put in SS frets. it was strung up with D'addario chromes. it's so far the oldest fender i've laid my hands on and the first pre-cbs one i've ever played.

I'm curious if anyone can comment on the difference on Mike's Lindy Fralin P pickups in his P4 string bass vs his Seymour Duncan Pickups in this PJ5.

I've played the P4 w Fralin side by side with a real 64 P and it knocked me out, but am not sure if the Duncan's will sound the same.

Also, does use the Duncan P in all his P5's, or only in his PJ5?

I believe he uses the Duncan in all of the 5 string P's. Its a custom wrap for him though. I love mine but haven't done a direct comparison with a Fralin.

That sounds interesting but this bass is too awesome to change. Maybe I'll buy a passive 5er and experiment with it.

Mike uses Fralins on his 4 strings and Duncans on his 5 strings (not including the Tbird pickups of course). They are both custom wound to his specs and sound great. I'd say the only difference I noticed between my P4s and the P5 I had was maybe a hair less output from the P5 but they both sound terrific. I've never compared them for overall tone on the top 4 strings so I can't comment on that.

Funny, I just swapped out the Duncan in my P5 today for a Nordy NP5v. This bass is about 10 years old, so I don't know if the pickup is the same as what goes in them now... my impression was the high end was a little muted for my taste. A little polite. As I run a fairly dark setup (Sunbeams 2+years old), I wanted the top end to open up a little more, and by golly... the Nordy does the trick! It doesn't sound radically different, there's just more clarity.

Been having some fun over the last few days making some demos of a new Bergantino cab using my Lull P4 and Lull PT4 (to show response to either extremes of the tone spectrum). Nowhere as good as Mr. Ed's demos, but pretty effective, I think.
