The Mike Lull Club Part 4

Just Stunning!!!

I love trans finishes over a fine piece of ash! The BEM is icing on the cake.

Mine's identical but with the full size body.

Too bad it probably sounds and plays like crap though!:roflmao:;):bassist:
You're right! All style, no substance... :(

Seriously though, that bass is perfect in every way! 2015 is our 10th year being together. I plan on being buried with this bass. I've already informed my fiance. LOL!

Wow! That bass does NOT look 10 years old! Awesome!
Thanks! I gig it, but I'm very careful! Lately she's been used mostly for recording. There was a time I had thought about swapping out the Bart pups and pre that came with it for another brand. Then I got a call to do a sit in gig and took her along and I was reminded why I love this bass so much. That electronics combo, coupled with the ash / maple body & neck simply KILLS!!!

I have a Dingwall that is over 20 years old (only about 2 years with me) that has barts (albeit custom wound for Sheldon) and a bart preamp. I have often thought about replacing the Bart Pups with Dingwall Pups, but the same thing happens with me. I gig it and I always come home thinking I am glad I haven't gone through with it. I have replaced the preamp with a newer Bart preamp, because the output from the original was a bit low. The new preamp has a gain adjustment with it, so I like it much better.

The cool thing about having an older example of a great luthier's work is that it represents a phase in his evolution. Sometimes new is better, and sometimes it's just great in a different way. The fact is, that as much as Sheldon's basses have evolved in very intelligent ways since my Prima Voodoo was made, that example of his early work plays magnificently and sounds awesome. So I know where you're at brother!!

Well, I am excited to say that I'm about to join the club. I own one, but it just ain't here yet, DAMMMIT!!!

Glamor shots will have to do for now. Has the Lindy Frailins, and weighs a svelte 7.9 pounds. Swamp ash body. I guess you would call the finish transparent sonic blueburst?
Sexy!!

Well, now that we know, one of us will dig you up and grab it!

I have a Lull 4-string passive Jazz, which I love. I am looking at a 34" scale Lull MV5 Jazz fiver, which has the "optional" Aguilar OBP3 (or something like that) preamp. Anyone here familiar with that preamp? Thoughts about it? I know you can go passive with this bass if so desired, but obviously since it's got the preamp I'd like to know more about it. Also the knob setup - apparently in passive mode there is no tone control, while in active there is a mid knob and a treble/bass stack knob. Also - it's not two volume knobs, it's got master volume and a blend knob.

Any comments of those familiar with this setup would be appreciated.

OBP-3 is a very good preamp, very musical, it gives you a lot of tonal options with switchable mids, etc.
Its pretty close to a kitchen sink preamp.
I bet the volume pot is still a passive tone control when the preamp is disengaged.

I have an OBP-3 in one of my M5V's with the same controls as you mention. I strongly prefer a master volume and blend over two volumes, but I always have the blend set in the middle and pretty much never change it.

I like it as it does what I need. Some don't though. They have A LOT of boost and it comes on fairly quick, which I believe are the main complaints.

NBD M5V maple/ash w/ the duncan single coils and OBP3!

I had no plans to buy this but it was almost half price at Moog Audio in Montreal (cheaper than a new Fender American Deluxe Jazz V), it sounded great, so I decided to take a chance. I'm not normally a Maple/Ash guy, but hey, it sounds deep. It needs a little setting up after 8 months in the store (I boiled the strings tonight) but it sounds good. I'm not used to the smoothness of a jazz bass (I'm more of a P-bass guy) but I love the feel, and it's a classic look, and the P pickup is probably not the ideal candidate for a B string. I may invest in an alternative pick guard or two just for fun.

The thing that sold me was the neck and how the bass sits on my body. I don't even notice the 35" scale.

Obligatory pics below (I'm a better cat photographer than bass photographer). I guess I have to read these Lull threads now to get caught up.

I have the twin to that. All the same specs and it's got a tort guard on it. It's my favorite bass that I own. My other M5V is tied with it though. Best playing, best sounding, just awesome basses.

Dig in when you play and smoothness gets accentuated nicely with some J bass growl. Nice clean bottom with a snarly top.

When I bought my M5V it had an Aguilar OBP3 in it. I liked the sound of the bass a lot in the shop and in my living room. Then I got it on stage in a band setting. Lost in the mix. It didn't matter what I did EQ-wise, the bass just wouldn't sit where I wanted it to. Even in passive mode the bass just wasn't sitting right. After trying it out on three separate gigs (with both cabinets and in-ear monitors) I was seriously considering selling the bass. I figured I'd give it another chance by swapping the Aguilar for a Sadowsky pre. Night and day difference. All of a sudden the bass was usable - and great sounding - in a live setting, whether in active or passive mode.

That's a little concerning, as I don't want to get into swapping pre's.

Hi Everyone

My new Lull badly needs new strings. I boiled the strings that had been on it in the store (for at least 8 months) but they still sound a little dead to me. I need some string recommendations for my specific application.

On this bass, I'd like an aggressive rock tone and strong mids and lower mids. I generally play with a strong attack with my fingers (i.e., close to the tone of a pick). I figure the Ash/Maple/Single Coil combo gets me close and so I need strings with good lower mids to get me all the way there.Sometimes I then roll off all the highs for a more dub-tone. My amp is an Orange TB500 and I have been known to use overdrive. I tend to favour the front pickup or both pickups (I don't do the super clean nasal bridge sound). What do you recommend? Bonus for sets available in balanced tension.

I like the Kalliums but they won't go through the body. Unless you all tell me that the through body on the B-string is not needed. But Mike seems to think it's needed.

Thank you, and apologies if this has been covered in the last 100 pages or parts 1-3 of the thread--I will have to catch up on my reading.
