I think I know the original owner of that bass! Unfortunately, I never got the chance to try it.

It's made a few rounds. I've tried it out at band practice and it sounds great. Plays great and the balance is nice. The neck reach can be a little uncomfortable but I'm working around it. I'm running it into a Markbass SD800 into a LDS cab loaded with 2-8's, 1-5, tweeter paired with a Markbass 1-15. This is the best sounding setup I've ever had. I had a fleeting thought of putting in a active preamp but that went away quickly. I've used three Fenders and a Dingwall at practice (all sound great) but the band took notice with the Lull. The drummer said " you get rid of that bass and I will break your fingers".

I have a quick question about the control layout on my new M4v. I have seen different layouts on these basses where the volume control is push pull for active and passive. I take it the smaller third knob is the passive tone control and on mine it is the push pull knob. Pushed in, the bass is active and pulled it's in passive mode.

I assumed that it should not affect the tone when in active mode, but it seems to in both active and passive modes. Am I imagining things? The active tone stack behaves as expected, and does nothing in passive mode.

Is that normal and if so, what's the best position for it when in active mode?

That's normal configuration, I've never seen the active/passive on the volume knob on a Lull.
You're not imaging things, that small knob is a passive treble cut and it works whether you're passive or active.

Ok thanks very much! Oh, and I saw on Rocket music's web site that volume was the push/pull for active passive on several M4V basses, but I guess that may have been a misprint.

It's not perfect but I like it. I'm keeping the stock strings on it for a while to get a sense of what they sound like. Not sure what I'll put on it after these wear out.

Also, I've been playing it passive b/c the preamp is just too much low end.

I noticed Ed F. did a pickup swap on his M5V. I think those are EMGs? Anyone know for sure? Has anyone tried EMGs in a Lull or have thoughts on it?



I think he swapped his pickguard to black too, which looks pretty cool. But I'll stick with my White Pearloid on my gold M4V for the moment.

Hi Everyone

My new Lull badly needs new strings. I boiled the strings that had been on it in the store (for at least 8 months) but they still sound a little dead to me. I need some string recommendations for my specific application.

On this bass, I'd like an aggressive rock tone and strong mids and lower mids. I generally play with a strong attack with my fingers (i.e., close to the tone of a pick). I figure the Ash/Maple/Single Coil combo gets me close and so I need strings with good lower mids to get me all the way there.Sometimes I then roll off all the highs for a more dub-tone. My amp is an Orange TB500 and I have been known to use overdrive. I tend to favour the front pickup or both pickups (I don't do the super clean nasal bridge sound). What do you recommend? Bonus for sets available in balanced tension.

I like the Kalliums but they won't go through the body. Unless you all tell me that the through body on the B-string is not needed. But Mike seems to think it's needed.

Sounds like you just need a good set up steels (as opposed to nickels). Makes a huge difference. Lull steels are good!

Hmmm.. I really haven't done a side by side comparison. My M5V has Bart pup and preamp. I'll set them up this weekend and get back to you.
