Hey Guys, I am about to post a WTB ad but I just wanted to enlist your help as well... if anyone comes across a PJ4 (or 5) w/ Bart or Aguilar pre for sale please let me know - assuming you don't want it for yourself.

I've been GAS'in for a P for sometime now, so I figured while I'm at it might as well make it a Lull and throw a J p/u in there for more options.

Ok, so gig report.

We were outside in a pretty open field. I was playing with my Praise and Worship band Day 40 who usually is in the alt rock sorta style. Anyways, I was a little down about the gig just because my rig is underpowered for this type of show, so I was really pushing my speakers(3X10 just isn't enough for this venue) but I also had a DI line out to the board, so I was kinda relying on that.

Anyways, a guy who is checking us out for management approached me and was like "man that is a nice bass! What is that?"

The best, however, was after the show, the sound guy walked up to me and shook my hand saying I did an excellent job and I sounded good.

Wow, even on, in my ears, a rougher gig, this bass killed. Is there nothing these basses can't do?! :D

That's great to hear BC... I've only been to a couple rehearsals since I got mine, haven't really been too active lately but it looks like I'll have a chance to "open it up" with 2 decent sized LA club gigs later on this month so I'm pumped. Also, I just got me a new Aguilar rig so it'll be a whole new set up for me. Kinda scary but exciting at the same time!

Let us know how it goes. Man, what aggie rig? Eventually I want to get that or a Mesa engineering rig, I think that would be a pretty sweet combo.

My new rig is an Aguilar AG500/GS212... I had a chance to buy my buddy's DB750/DB212 rig for a great deal but I would've owed him a lot of cash and I didn't like that idea at all. So we'll see what this rig will do this Sunday and Monday night for rehearsals then Tuesday and Friday for the gigs - playing 6 originals and 2 Stevie Wonder covers! Backing an up and coming singer named Justin Grennan - watch out for this guy, he is gooood!

Thats amazing man. Hopefully I will be playing with a guitarist Phil Holthause, who is an AMAZING guitarist and writer. Something about Lull bassists being great backing bassists for great artists I suppose. :)

I just got back from a 3-day engagement in Ottawa! My band was playing at a convention there and I took the Lull Modern 5 as my bass. My set up was a GK 800RB and a GK 410. The tone was very agressive and more of a rock profile than I'm used to but the Lull did a great job. Since I don't have a 3-band pre it took me a while to find "my tone" on the amp head, but once there, I was generally happy with my tone.

Still debating a 3-band pre.....hmmmmm.:eyebrow:

I have the 2 channel AG500... The OD channel sounds great, it's what I've wanted in a pedal but never found. The only thing is I like such a low amount of distortion that I find myself putting the Lull is passive mode when I switch channels, the boost of the Bart pre really drives the amp eventhough I have the drive control set to 0. I like just a mild amount of dirt - and this amp gives a very tube-like grit.

Just got back from my first rehearsal tonight with my new set up and I am pumped... I am really crazy about my tone now. For the first time I am fully confident in my bass and amp. Tuesday is the gig and I get to crank it up a little so I am looking forward to hearing it then.

I know what you mean, I use the GK 700RB. I know they are two diff. animals, but when you finally dial in the GK tone, its pretty darn awesome.

Congrats YCB! I can't wait till I can afford to get the rig I want. When I tried the Aggie AG500 dual channel, I thought the same thing. Perfect over drive, really smooth and easy to work with.

How many of us here have a Passive Tone Control on their Active bass - regardless of preamp???

I've heard both sides of the argument as to whether or not it's necessary... Talked to Mike on Saturday and he said he doesn't personally need it. I've never played a bass with one so I don't know what I am missing... The one thing I can speculate on is when I solo the neck p/u for an imitation P sound I would like to be able to roll off the highs a bit, even cutting back my Treble on the Bart pre doesn't do it...

Thoughts?

IMHO, PTC's are most useful if you have a preamp that is boost only, such as the Aggie OBP-1 or a Sadowsky. Otherwise, they're still useful, but it's much more at a nuance level, as it's now just a matter of liking the specific effects it has better than the effects of cutting the treble control on the preamp. They are noticeably different, and it has to do at least mostly with the way the capacitance introduced by the PTC reacts with the inductance of the pickups.

IMHO, I don't miss a PTC on an active bass that has a treble cut, but if the preamp has a PTC as a feature, I use it because it can be fun just to have another sound to play with.

On a bass that has no ability to cut treble otherwise, however, including a passive bass, I wouldn't own one without a PTC. There are simply times when I absolutely must tame the high end, tho rarely for all songs, so I don't want to have to keep messing with my amp to get that done.
