Mike Lulls rule. I can't wait to get mine. Also, I had the pleasure of running into Mr. Beller at NAMM at the Mike Lull and Pavel booths. He and 12-year old bassist, Brandon Rose, were playing together at the Pavel booth. Sweet! Look out for Brandon. That boy can PLAY!

I play all styles of music but primarily praise and worship (Lincoln Brewster, Hillsong, etc), gospel (Hezekiah Walker, James Hall, etc.), contemporary jazz (Norman Brown, Najee, Gerald Albright, etc.), Reggae, and Neo Soul (Erykah Badu, Jill Scott, Musiq). I also play old school r&b and funk.
Which preamp, IYHO, would best suit me on an M5V?

Off the bat I should say that I've never been a huge user of onboard preamps, leaving most of my EQ adjustments done on my Preamp. That being said, I noticed I've been "tweaking" the onboard pre's on my Lulls much more than any bass I've owned, most likely having to do with the quality of them verses the onboard electronics contained in my older, *lesser* basses. I find that the Bart NTBT 2-band and NTMB 3-band preamps Mike uses (along with varied midrange module typically used in the Modern 5s) are suited extremely well to his bass designs and pickup choices, either the Custom Lull Basslines I've played in other owner's M5s, the Fralin Single Coils in my M4, or even the Aero Type 1s in my M5 that was a run of only 4/5 basses Mike did with Aeros (and IMO, should be offered as an option as they kill. It may be an issue of fulfillment as I know Aero is a pretty small operation with a Wait List).
I'd honestly give the shop a call and talk to Mike or Roger about your influences, the styles of music you play, and what would work best for you in an M5V. I've spent a long time on the phone with them asking technical questions, and they've always taken the time to interact with a customer until you're fully sastisfied. However, do realize that NAMM just finished up and small-shop builders are likely just getting back to their "day jobs" and might only give you 15 minutes instead of 1/2 hour.

Man, if it was me, I would pop the Aguilar in there in a heartbeat as it gives you lots of top end for slap. Also, with the mid switch (hopefully you're getting one) you get a lot of flexibility. It's very clean and a tad bright.

+1 on the Aggie. Barts are nice, but they always appear a bit limited to what my sound needed. The Aggie is super Flexible IMHO and well worth it.
I am into similar styles and my M5V w/ Basslines and Bart preamp works great. At NAMM, I was playing my friend Ed's new M5V w/ Basslines and Aguilar and that sounded great as well... At this point I really don't know which sounds better to me. I do like the fact that the Treble control on the Bart is more in the high mids than highs, I don't like zingy highs which also explains why I've found a home in my Swamp Ash/Rosewood combo. The Bart is really subtle, which I love. The features are the same with the mid switch and all so it's whichever sounds better to your ear.
But I do also suggest calling Mike, he is quite the guy... and Roger too.

+1 on the Bart treble REALLY being a high mid; that's what I don't like about it. If you would like some extra zing on your slap or your strings are dying and you need to put some upper end back in your sound, the Aguilar will do that.
The Bart is good for rock, vintage-style, and "warmth". I prefer the Aguilar for more more flexibility on the high end.

I spoke with Roger a couple of days ago about the differences and he was very helpful. I just wanted to hear opinions from people who have either one of the preamps to get a general idea how they each sound in the mix.

I just picked up a Lull 5 with Lindy Fralin J's and Bart 3 band pre (not sure of the designation). The control layout goes like this:
*Stacked volume / tone
*Blend
*Mids (push / pull for active / passive, no mid selector that I can see)
*Stacked treble / bass
Pretty much a garden variety config. but I noticed the tone control works in both passive and active modes. How do the tone and treble controls differ in their ability to roll-off high end? Both do a decent job but each lends a slightly different tonal character.

That's the natural one with black hardware you got right? That is hot... I say over and over again that it's my fav look for a J and then with black hardware to top it off, wow!
I really like having the passive tone on my M5V, I've been running the eq flat most of the time recently and I love being able to darken up the tone with the ptc.
So let me get this straight, a while ago you were on the verge of selling your beautiful LPB M5V and now you got a second Lull? I know your LPB is rosewood (I can't recall the body wood) but how do the pickups sound compared, since they both have Bart preamps?
I spent a lot of time at the Lull booth but I stupidly didn't play the T-Bass... For one I was too caught with my potential (at the time) PJ5, and two I was never into the T-Bird.
But I did hear a couple guys try it and it sounded real good... Rock tone for days!
Glad you asked! I did trade off the LPB / rosewood jobbie a few months back and sorta regretted it. I didn't care much for the Bart SC's. This one has the LF SC's (?) and a semi-birdseye maple FB which I prefer over the rosewood. The LF's are an improvement and I've experienced no typical 60 cycle hum that I associate with SC's. The Bart pre's are comparable but I do miss having the switchable mid selector. I've got the white MOP guard on her now but she also came with a black and tort guards as well.

Oh, so the LPB has Bart sc's? Hmmm, I could've sworn you said it had Basslines, guess I was wrong. I need to get my hands on a Lull with Fralins, just to see how they compare - didn't do it at NAMM. Specially with my passive PJ5 it's awesome and sports Basslines but I am curious about the difference.
By the way, congrats on the new M5V and slap that black guard on it and call it a day! I love that bass!
Maybe they were BassLines; I really don't recall. Either way, I was less than overwhelmed. The LF's sound nice in passive mode, better than expected. I attenuated the pre output so it matches that of passive and A/B'd the two through my Yorkie combo (Yorkie, small fries, med. drink - $3.99). The passive output is full t/o the range but especially impressive in the low mids. Definitely worth checking out.
So it would look best with the black pickguard?
