The shot of the single pick up body is my bass....Its the #1
production piece after the two prototypes shown in the thread. Look closely and you'll see two different pickguard colors, the black one has a pre amp as well. :)

Those are cool! I wonder if he'll eventually offer one in a 5 string??

Yeah, I'm paying off an AC LM5 and once I get that I'm selling my Musicman to get a Lull. Those basses are off the chain. I went to that booth soooooo many times during NAMM and kept bringing different people to the booth to check out those basses. I got them hooked, too. :) I have my eye on an M5V with a birdseye maple board and swamp ash body. I haven't decided on a color yet.

Tony, it was very nice seeing you at NAMM.

Bryan's red M5 (a late '90s-2000 build, AFAIK) is the bass that brought me to Lulls. It's nice to have "name" friends that will toss you their multi-thousand-dollar custom bass to inflict your hack playing on and realize that this instrument is what I've been looking for in a bass for years. :smug:

... having to wait several years after until the chance comes by to pick up one of my own, not as nice. ;) Ironically, what I ended up with had changes I happen to very much approve of: the newer-body with the "non-boner" smaller lower horn but with the controls in the old-school diamond pattern and not 4-inline that's standard now, non-standard Aero Type 1 pickups that Mike only used on 4-5 basses that I prefer a touch over the Duncans, and color/hardware combinations that I dig immensely.

Yohann, can you tell me who's playing the Transparent Amber M5 (add the diamond layout, black hardware, and Y-key Ultralites and you've got my M5) below the picture of Beller? It also looks like Steve Vai keeping a low profile, and it would make sense for him to be picking up a Lull for home use given how much he likes Bryan's tone during his last tour and "Aching Hunger" Orchestral shows before that... or did I confuse XavidmanX for a guitard? :) Granted, an extremely talented and wealthy one, but one nonetheless. Also, congrats on the P/J5! I'd *love* to pick one up from Mike but with a P/H configuration with a Nordstrand Dual Coil in the rear like the Fender American Deluxe Ps - I'm not much a fan of straight Precisions or P/Js, but I really dig that pickup combo.

That is Adam Nitti... He came over to jam with Bryan after his solo set - needless to say that was awesome! Sorry for the bad pic... He kept on moving - and it didn't help that I was trying to snap a pic right when he was setting up and getting a feel for things.

Your pickup configuration ideas sound great... I was actually willing to get a straight Lull P but I figured a little more versatility wouldn't hurt... So far though I've had the blend knob panned to full P position - that's the sound I was after! Now that I have my "classics", the next thing would be a modern bass - like an M5 with 2 dual coils (if Mike would do it) and an Aguilar preamp or something - just a modern beast. And you know what, I like the older body M5 with the "boner" lower horn, hahaha.

Oh ya, and just to comment on the Plek discussion in this thread a while back... Now that I have first hand experience in a Plek'd and non-Plek'd Lull, I am a believer. I am waiting for a trip to the Seattle area (which I want to do sometime anyway) and get my M5V to Mike. It plays great now but I want it to feel like my new bass, just effortless to play. Good excuse to visit the shop too!

Wow, I never would have guessed that was Nitti - going "incognito" with the cap pulled down plus the camera blur is great camouflage. I would have loved to hear his jam with Bryan - I know they've taught at the same Masterclasses and have gotten along as friends, but to hear them trade fours? Nitti's... well, he's Nitti and Bryan is a criminally unknown bassist as well as soloist... by most of all himself. :eyebrow:

I'd lay money that a Modern 5 with 2 DCs would wipe the floor with just about any bass if Mike would be willing to make it. And I know that the majority of players perfer the larger lower horn, but I'm the opposite of you: 5'5" & 145 lbs, so anything that'll make an M5 look smaller and small, curved Spectors for this "Wee Lad". ;)

The last time I spoke to Beller I was on the fence but he sold me on the PLEK (he's had all his basses done locally in Nashville by Joe Glasser, who taught both the Gibson Custom Shop as well as the Mike Lull Staff when they had their respective PLEKs installed) so I'm going to be sending my M4 and M5 to Mike. I'm actually glad I procrastinated as he's lowered the price and now includes a setup so the shipping doesn't sting as much. There's only two shops with PLEKs close to me but can't come close price-wise with Mike's "Lull Discount", along with the fact that the builder of my basses will be doing it... that goes a long way in my book. :D

As for a trip to Seattle, I've already told my Partner... "Go see the Space Needle, do whatever you want... just drop me off at Mike Lull's with the Credit Card." I still need a Modern 5 fretless, a Modern 4XL (the body design has been growing on me over the last few months as I've been playing more 4-string), my P/HC 5er and a Custom LullBird if he's up for it: modern hardware like Hipshot Y-key Ultalites and an A-Style bridge but the classic pickups with a Birdseye Maple 'board in Sparkle Black with a matching headstock. :eek: :hyper:

Adam Nitti at the NAMM Bass Bash was just insane! And I don't know why I didn't record his jam with Bryan Beller - quite inspirational.

It's good to hear that you have all these ideas as to what other Lull models you want - means I am not alone. Eventhough I (now more than ever) am ok with basses for a long while I can't help but run through specs in my mind - next on the GAS list is a fretless M4XL then the modern beast I spoke of - be it an M5 or an M5V.

So how many Lulls do you have Ian? If it's not too much trouble I would love to see a family pic... Or are they somewhere in this thread? Gotta look through and find out.

Wow Yohann, that bass is amazing! Its like my bass's sister, who is a brunnette(mine is a maple neck :D)

As a side note, Nitti has been a player of Lull's as well as his Warrior basses for some time.

Man, I gotta meet Mike one of these days.

Just an update... I was noticing a drop in output or midrange when the blend knob is in the middle position for both pickups on. I tried to ignore it for a couple days thinking to myself that I will mostly use the P pickup anyway.... But I just couldn't leave it alone.

Called the shop and was advised by Roger (and TB'er Vic) that it's just the way it is with that type of setup but changing it to V/V/T would help - which I wanted anyway. Fortunately I had a spare volume put from when I installed a PTC in my M5V.

Long story long... In less than a week of having the bass, I've already hacked into it. Glad to report all is well and my new bass is truly awesome now!
