I have passive controls in both my Modern 4 & Modern 5 and to be honest, to my ears when engaged it sounds 97% like the Active controls set flat but with a *very* slight volume drop. Only my Modern 4 has Lull's "PTC" however, and I'm halfway tempted to send my M5 into the shop to be PLEKed, a few dings from the previous owner touched up, rewired from Vol/Blend to Vol/Vol (VrVr, I can absolutely understand your POV: I was very much a "Vol/Blend Guy" until I was lucky enough to have my first Vol/Vol bass be one of very high quality which showed me the things you can do with that setup as opposed to a Vol/Blend) and... somehow have a PTC wired up - a Modern 5 with an NTMB and MCT-3MC unit (a 250/500/750Hz mid-boost with separate 2KHz to 15KHz treble boost) doesn't leave much room.

Paul, firstly, may I say that's absolutely one of the most beautiful painted Lulls I've *ever* seen, and if you swap the Rosewood for a Maple fretboard you'd have what I've spec'd out on my "Dream Basses" .doc... matching headstock and all, a small aspect I feel "ties a bass together" ( :smug: ) and once I'm in the position to purchase my "Dream Basses" new an option I'd certainly go for. I'd like my "Modern" M4, M5 & M4XLs to have transparent finishes but for a bass that has a bit more of a Vintage tilt, you've either been reading my mind or hacking my network. ;)

One question, however: are you *sure* that's CAR? The photographs are extremely well-done, but to me look more like Lull's [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]... which IMO is a killer finish as well, and certainly one not seen nearly as much as CAR. I keep switching between it and [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] as the color for my M5V in my Spreadsheet until I placate myself with the thought of "Well, you can get an M4V in "Candy Apple Orange" and an M5V in "Burnt Orange Metallic"... :D

I'm down to 1 Lull again... Traded the PJ5 this week and I have an incoming FBass BN5 tomorrow in its place. I loved the PJ5 but at the end of the day the P sound was more of a novelty for me and not my go to tone... Unlike the M5V, which happens to do a decent P sound with neck p/u solo'd and some eq tweaking.

I'm lucky enough to live fairly close to Mike Lull. I dropped my turner Ren5 off for some "adjustment" and while I was there I was again totally floored by playing one of Mike's P basses.
Any of you have a fretless lull P?
I am strongly considering getting a Lull P4, passive with an ebony fretless board.
I'd like to know your opinions on the pros and cons of a straight P vs a P/J configuration...remember, this will be a fretless

I purchased a M5V by chance, I have owned many Jazz style basses over the 30+ years of playing, This Lull blew me away. Amazing playing and sounding bass, Wish I would have taking that chance years ago, The Blues in DC Metro area would have been better. Now I can give my 62 Jazz a long deserved rest,Can I join in the Group!! Would be and Honor!

So, uh, I sold my Lull bass a few months ago and got a Sadowsky. :scowl: Thought I would try out the 34" scale 5-string thing, because everyone talked about how tight the B was even on tha scale. But I just can't seem to get used to this bass. I don't want to say that I regret it, but I'm really missing my Lull right now. :bawl:

I'm thinking I might have Mike do a custom build for me, but I'm afraid that if it doesn't work out for me that I'll lose a good chunk of money in the process (I'm a starving student back at school again at almost 30). Preferably, I would find the Lull I wanted on the used market, though I haven't seen any in the last couple of months that hold any interest for me.

I love the sound my Sadowsky is getting, but I just can't get used to the feel. Wide string spacing and too much space between the body and strings are the main complaints, but worthy ones. The Lull, OTOH, had a heavy neck and a bit of neck dive that's never fun on a gig. Any advice?

There's something about Sadowsky's 5'ers that I could never get used to. Will Lull make you a 34" 5-string? If he will, I would try to work with him to make you a dream bass.

Yeah Brent is great, but style-wise we're pretty different. I actually just played a gig with Tess last week when I was back for thanksgiving.

Anyways, hopefully Mike will work with you on a bass that fits your needs. I actually got my hands on a Sadowsky body, and I'm going to take it to him when I'm back in Seattle and see if he'll make a neck for it.

Wow, for a while there I really thought this thread was dead... Glad to see some new owners. Proud to say that I still have my trusty M5V, it's my only bass at the moment and it's taking everything I throw at it like a champion!

Nice! What kind of electronics you got tucked under the hood? Mine had Bart pups and pre, but they were too polite and thin-sounding for my taste.

Scott, I was totally GAS'ing for that black Lull. If I didn't already have a killer black Lull, I would have figured out a way to make you an offer!

+1 on giving Mike a call and seeing if he will make something custom for you. You're not asking for a radical change. Although, I love the feel of a B string on a 35" scale instrument.

Let us know what he says.
