I am surprising myself more and more lately... I've always been a J kinda guy. Even back in the day when I was a guitar player, on looks alone I preferred the J. But as of lately, I've been finding myself looking for that thick P tone, I just love how fat it sounds all the time anytime - and being fully passive too!

The only thing is, I seem to only want to play it with my Aguilar rig because it's passive I have my amp settings down and know what sound I will get. Without my rig I am a little weary bringing it because I feel I don't have too much control if I happen to not like the amp that's provided - so for that I still bring my M5V - the preamp can make up for anything the amp is lacking.

Yes, I am trying to work with what I have and giving it the time it deserves - I'm done regretting selling stuff too quickly.

Anyone happen to catch that silver sparkle M4 on the bay? That's a hot one. I was just looking at an old BP magazine from '05 when Stefan Lessard of DMB was on the cover holding his silver sparkle Modulus Flea bass, and I thought, "Wow, it would be cool to get a Lull M4 like that." Then voila, there's one right there... I wish, I wish.

I've had this bass for a few years now. Bought it from Adrian Garcia, RIP. Love this bass. Thinking about moving to a 34" though. There're a few tunes where I'm hanging out in first position the whole tune and it really takes a toll on my wrist. And the added tension on the strings inflames my arthritis sometimes in my knuckles, and I'm only 27! But anyway...

You can see in this pic where the chrome on the bridge is pitting. No prob, she's actually in the shop with Mike getting a new bridge as we speak! And a Plek job, and a buff job, and few other little things to bring her back to new.

Beautiful bass Scott! If you ever decide to sell it, there are dozens of guys who would instantly start drooling!

Just curious - did you install the Bartolini's or did it come that way? If they are factory-installed, that might indicate an older bass. HAve you checked with Mike?

Lastly, I was thinking about putting a brass bridge on it to see if it will make it deeper sounding - Mike said it would make a difference. Anybody try this? And Mike's bridges are the .708 spacing, right?
Me too...thinking about putting a brass bridge on my M5V. What did Mike say about it?
Are you sure about .708 spacing?

Here's my M5V #1093

Nice bass Scott! One like yours that they had at Gelb Music started my Lull gas and I haven't looked back since... I still wish my M5V was black/black but I think I will keep the rosewood board for the sound - it's more me, though the maple looks hotter! What kind of preamp is in there? I've wanted to get a 2nd M5V or an M5 and put Barts in there and make it my ultra modern bass (by this I mean MTD style tone) since my M5V's got the vintage/modern stuff covered.

To lowfreq1... I didn't really get into full details w/ Mike as to the difference but he said that it would make a difference if my goal was to make my PJ5 sound deeper and bassier. Still haven't done anything cause I'm going back and forth about selling, but I keep going back to "keep it" so the bridge might be soon. Nice bass by the way... I have a tort guard for mine but didn't really like that particular piece (it doesn't look like the one on my PJ5) so I changed to black - which is really more me. And yes, I confirmed with Roger (when he was still there) that it is the .708 spacing.

is it just an impression or most boutique bass users tend to prefer active instruments?
I'm a Mike Lull V4 owner.
I prefer so much passive tone over active one, but I do understand why people might prefer the latter.
it just looks strange to me that SO MANY people tend to prefer active basses when it comes to boutique...

For me it's all about the versatility of an active preamp. If I got to play all my gigs with my Aguilar rig then I wouldn't mind having a passive only bass. In fact, I play my M5V flat or in passive mode when I use my rig. But I go to so many gigs, rehearsals and sessions where the amps are less than ok so I like to leave the amp's eq flat and use my bass' eq/tone to carry me through. My PJ5 has been reserved for original only projects where I know I will have my rig or at least the tone is something I can plan for. But walking in rig unknown, active all the way for me.

The Bartolinis pickups were a custom install for Adrian Garcia. And in fact, I just listed it for trade or a possible sell in the classifieds. ;)

Got a Bart preamp along with the Bart pickups. Definetly not an MTD like tone. It's another take on the modern vintage jazz tone. Very cool, but certainly not an ultra-modern thing.

+1

For me, it's about having the tone-shaping capability at my fingertips instead of tweaking at the amp. If the amp is not ideal, I could be tweaking for a while and I don't often have that luxury.

On Bass Player's new site, Bryan Beller has debuted his just-received Mike Lull T-Bass that he'll be using for this Fall's Dethklok tour:

BB_MLull_Bass.jpg

"I can't tell you how much fun it is to play this thing. Unlike the model that inspired it, it is a DREAM to play. The neck feels amazing, everything feels right on both hands, and it sounds huge. If you ever wanted to play (and, let's admit it, look as cool as those who do play) a vintage T-Bird but just couldn't get over what a dog the actual instrument was, this thing will blow your mind...

For those bassists who follow Dethklok and Metalocalpyse closely, I can hear you wondering: why isn't that T-Bass a 5-string, like the one Murderface plays? Well, first, there is no T-Bass 5-string...yet. Second, this bass is strung low and heavy for extra metal power (from low to high): C-F-Bb-Eb. So it's like a 5-string, tuned up a half-step, with no top string, on the body of a 4-string. That's brutal."

I bought my M5V about a month ago, and have been gigging it like crazy ever since. Alder/CAR/rosewood, with Duncan SC's and Bart NTMB. I love it, but I've decided to send it back.

:D

:D

For good reason. I've always been partial to vol/blend controls, and this one was built with vol/vol. I loved the sound, and figured I could live with it. But...since a lot of my gigs require some sort of volume alteration (speeches during the set, etc.) and since I almost always have the pickups set identically, it became difficult (especially on dark stages) to efficiently ensure I had the output matched. So, following some great communication with Paul, the bass is going on a road trip back to its birthplace for a little pot swapping. Aside from working those volume knobs, this was really cemented when I played the M5V my local store just got in. Same specs as mine (except the finish is ice blue) but with vol/blend instead of vol/vol. Two minutes playing that beast and I knew I had to spend a few more Samolians on mine. It hasn't yet been put in a box, but already I miss it and can't wait to play it. :D

Anyway, this bass is just amazing...I've never gotten such positive feedback from other musicians. Here are a few clips from a wedding gig (hence the quotes you'll hear) I did last Saturday, followed by a bit more eye candy from lunch time today.

Have Mike put in a Passive Tone Control while he's at it... You'll love it even more! I, on the other hand, like the volume/volume setup that I swapped out my PJ5 that came with a blend.

What I meant was a passive high rolloff like you'd find on a passive jazz/bass... Mine has the same push/pull active/passive switch but I added a tone control so it works just like a passive jazz - like Sadowsky's VTC.
