The most beautiful songs

What songs do you consider to be among the most beautiful? Here's a quick list of my own off the top of my head:

  • Norwegian Wood, Tomorrow Never Knows by the Beatles
  • You Know, You Know by Mahavishnu Orchestra
  • Shevil by the Melvins
  • She Hangs Brightly, & All Your Sisters by Mazzy Star
  • Thru the Eyes of Ruby by Smashing Pumpkins
  • Romeo & Juliet by Tchaikovsky
  • Inca Roads by Frank Zappa (minus the parts with vocals at beginning & end), particularly the version on You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore Vol. 2

Jar of Flies (the whole album) - Alice On Chains
Rain When I Die - Alice In Chains
Shine on You Crazy Diamond - Floyd
Brain Damage /Eclipse - Floyd
Comfortably Numb - Floyd

Interesting question and lists so far. Beauty, for me is a moving target. For the last couple of days I've been thinking of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" (original harmony and arrangement) is about as perfect as it can be. On the other hand, ballads and slow songs aren't always where beauty lives. Every now and then it's interesting to take "Revolution #9" and listen for the beauty there. If you're into exploring and extending your ear, check out some things by Steve Reich, or John Adams. Relaxation is not always the end result of beauty. All human emotions can be beautiful (really, its all we have). See if you can find some beauty in George Antheil's "Ballet Mecanique" (you metal guys would like that) or even Lou Reed's "Metal Machine Music". Use your ears like humans.
